What's left behind the scenes

  • In the episode "The Blind Banker," Dan Brown's novel "The Lost Symbol" is lying in the victim's house.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and Toby Jones have appeared in films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Cumberbatch played Doctor Stephen Strange in 'Doctor Strange' (2016), Freeman played Everett Ross in 'Captain America: Civil War' (2016), and Jones played Doctor Arnim Zola in 'Captain America: The First Avenger' (2011) and 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' (2014).
  • In the second episode of the third season, Sherlock refers to a guardsman as a grenadier, but his uniform—specifically the fact that the buttons are arranged in groups of five—indicates that he serves in the Welsh Guards, not the Grenadier Guards.
  • In the episode "A Scandal in Belgravia" (2012), Sherlock tells Adler: "During the Second World War, the Allies found out that Coventry was going to be bombed because they had broken the German code. But wanting to hide the fact of the decryption from the Germans, they allowed the bombing to happen." Later, Cumberbatch played Alan Turing—the mathematician who cracked the German "Enigma" cipher machine—in the film "The Imitation Game" (2014).
  • The opening credits and captions in the series are set in the Johnston Sans font, well-known for its use in the London Underground.
  • In the episode "The Hounds of Baskerville" (2012), after listening once again to Sherlock's lecture on his high intelligence and the insignificance of emotions, Watson sarcastically calls him "Spock." In the movie "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013), Benedict Cumberbatch played the role of Khan—the arch-enemy of Captain Kirk and Spock. Furthermore, Leonard Nimoy, the first actor to play Spock, played Sherlock Holmes on stage. Nimoy also recorded the song "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" based on the book "The Hobbit." Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch both appeared in the film adaptation of that book. There is another connection between Holmes and Spock. In the film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (1991), it is implied that Sherlock Holmes was an ancestor of Spock: "My ancestor believed that if you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" (a quote from Holmes in "The Sign of Four").
  • The character of Molly Hooper, who did not appear in any of the Sherlock Holmes books, was intended to be a one-episode character to further emphasize Sherlock's lack of social skills, particularly his inability to communicate with women. However, Steven Moffat and other producers liked Louise Brealey's performance so much that they decided to write her character into the series' main storyline.
  • The character of Greg Lestrade is a combination of Inspectors Gregson and Lestrade. In the books, the latter's first name begins with the letter 'G' but remains a mystery. This is why Sherlock constantly forgets Lestrade's name.
  • Sherlock's parents were played by Benedict Cumberbatch's parents.
  • When the character Jim Moriarty broke the glass at the Tower of London (Season 2, Episode 3, 'The Reichenbach Fall'), there was no royal robe behind him inside the room; however, by the time the police caught up with him, he was sitting in the chair wearing the robe.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch was the only person auditioned for the role of Sherlock. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss invited him to audition after seeing him in the film 'Atonement' (2007). During the audition, it became obvious that the role suited him so well that there was no point in sending the script to anyone else.
  • In the break between the filming of the first and second seasons, Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch were cast in Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' trilogy. This time, Freeman played the lead role of Bilbo Baggins, while Cumberbatch was content with voicing the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer.
  • The 'Shad Sanders' bank from the episode 'The Blind Banker' was filmed in the Debevoise & Plimpton skyscraper, located at Old Broad Street, City of London, Greater London EC2N 1HQ.
  • Immediately before his first audition for the series, Martin Freeman's wallet was stolen. He arrived in a foul mood, leaving the producers with the impression that he was not interested in the role. Fortunately, by the second audition, the actor had recovered and landed the part.
  • Holmes and Watson's apartment at 221B Baker Street was filmed at 187 North Gower Street in the Bloomsbury district of London. For the pilot episode, some scenes were filmed on Baker Street. A BBC representative explained the decision to stop filming on Baker Street by citing the heavy traffic, as well as the abundance of Sherlock Holmes-themed items and signs, particularly at 221B, which would have had to be removed.
  • The name of Sherlock Holmes' rival—Swedish media mogul Charles Magnussen—was based on a real person. Magnussen (1879-1948) owned several newspapers, was a producer, and founded the Svensk Filmindustri film studio in 1919.
  • In the first episode, 'A Study in Pink,' the word RACHE was found written in Latin letters near one of the corpses, which means 'revenge' in German. In Conan Doyle's novella 'A Study in Scarlet,' where a similar inscription in red is found on the wall next to a body, the police conclude it refers to a woman named Rachel, while Sherlock Holmes is not so quick to judge. Ultimately, in the book, it is revealed that the killer wrote the word in his own blood, meaning the German word for 'revenge.' In the series, however, this inscription (which is inexplicably large) is scratched into the floor with fingernails by the victim in their final moments of life and refers to the name Rachel, even though the police in the show assumed it was the German word.
  • It was originally planned that each season would consist of 6 episodes (instead of 3), with each episode lasting 60 minutes (instead of 90).
  • Jim Moriarty uses an HTC Incredible S mobile phone (distinguishable by the unusual shape of the back cover and the dual flash). Notably, in one scene in the first episode of the second season, he holds it upside down (the camera and flash are located at the top of the phone; however, when he receives a message and takes out the phone, there is no camera or flash at the top, but there is the characteristic curve of the cover, which is located at the bottom of the phone).
  • As in Conan Doyle's works, Watson had served in the military in Afghanistan in the series.
  • The titles of some episodes of the series play on the titles of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories; for example, 'A Study in Scarlet' became 'A Study in Pink,' 'A Scandal in Bohemia' became 'A Scandal in Belgravia,' 'The Sign of Four' became 'The Sign of Three,' and so on.
  • Sherlock sometimes uses a mnemonic technique called the 'Memory Palace' or 'Mind Palace.' This is not a screenwriter's invention, but a real mnemonic method with roots dating back to ancient Rome.
  • In the episode "His Last Vow" (2014), Janine mentions a small cottage in the county of Sussex. This is a reference to Conan Doyle's collection of stories "His Last Bow," in which Sherlock retires and moves to a small cottage in Sussex.
  • Matt Smith auditioned for the role of Doctor Watson before he was cast in the lead role of the series 'Doctor Who' (2005).
  • The house where Irene lives is the same house where Sally Sparrow encounters the Weeping Angels in the 'Blink' episode of the 2005 series 'Doctor Who', which was also showrun by Steven Moffat.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch starred in Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' trilogy alongside Christopher Lee and Ian McKellen. All three share the distinction of having portrayed Sherlock Holmes.
  • In the episode "The Hounds of Baskerville" (2012), John mentioned that he and Sherlock once played the board game Cluedo, and Sherlock determined that the murderer was the victim. In the episode "A Scandal in Belgravia" (2012), a Cluedo game can be seen attached to the wall near the mirror.
  • The coat Benedict Cumberbatch wore in the pilot episode was bought by Mark Gatiss, who later gave it to the actor as a birthday present.
  • In 2011, Danny Boyle directed a production of 'Frankenstein' at the Royal National Theatre, in which the lead roles were played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, who alternated between playing Victor Frankenstein and his monster. Both actors played different versions of the Victorian-era Sherlock Holmes living in modern times, but on opposite sides of the Atlantic: the first in the series 'Sherlock' (2010), and the second in the series 'Elementary' (2012).
  • In terms of appearance, Jim Moriarty serves as a subtle foil to Sherlock: Sherlock has long curly hair, while Moriarty is perfectly groomed; Sherlock wears a shirt with an open collar, while Moriarty always wears a tie; Sherlock wears a classic coat with a high turned-up collar, while Moriarty wears a shorter, well-tailored jacket with a Nehru-style stand-up collar; Sherlock is mostly clean-shaven, while Moriarty sports light stubble.
  • While preparing for the role of Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch read the complete collection of Conan Doyle's works featuring the famous detective.
  • According to the series, Watson suffers from psychosomatic pain in his leg despite actually being wounded in the shoulder. This is a subtle irony regarding the confusion in the original works—in the Sherlock Holmes stories, Arthur Conan Doyle was quite inconsistent about the location of Doctor Watson's wound.
