What's left behind the scenes

  • Upon the completion of the first season, the relatives of Eddie Kessler (the prototype for Louis) approached Anthony Luckieure (who played Louis Kessler) and offered to let him wear Kessler's wristwatch, a gift from Nucky Johnson, during filming.
  • Michael Stuhlbarg prepared for the role of Arnold so thoroughly that the screenwriters soon discovered he knew more about his character than they did, and eventually began consulting Stuhlbarg himself regarding the character.
  • Atlantic City of the 1920s was precisely recreated in Brooklyn, New York. The budget for the premiere episode was $18 million, of which $5 million went toward recreating a city block with all its interiors, as well as constructing a boardwalk approximately 91.5 meters long. Executive producer and pilot episode director Martin Scorsese was so demanding regarding accuracy that, for example, he insisted the boardwalk planks be exactly the same size as those used in Atlantic City at the time.
  • Martin Scorsese, the project's producer and director, encouraged improvisation on set during the filming of the pilot episode, which is quite typical for his films but rare for television projects.
  • To promote the second season of the series, starting September 25, 2011, historical "Lo-V" (Low Voltage) type cars were put into service in the New York City subway. These cars were produced from 1916 to 1925 and operated until 1969. The historical train consisted of cars No. 5290 and 5292 built in 1917, and cars No. 5443 and 5483 built in 1924. Instead of departure and destination stations, the cars featured signs advertising the series, and the interiors were covered with promotional posters. The historical train ran on the IRT route from 42nd Street to 96th Street, with a single stop at 72nd Street.
  • Richard Harrow's disfigured face was a product of computer technology. According to the actor who played the role, Jack Huston, he kept a coin in his left cheek to make speaking more difficult.
  • They planned to film the death of the character Charlie Cox, but due to an accident on set, they decided to abandon the idea and instead show his corpse rather than the death scene itself.
  • The real-life Enoch "Nucky" Johnson served as the prototype for "Nucky" Thompson. Physically, Johnson looked nothing like actor Steve Buscemi: he was an imposing man, tall and heavyset with a bald head, resembling the character Tony Soprano from "The Sopranos." The creator of "Boardwalk Empire," Terence Winter, who also wrote scripts for "The Sopranos," wanted to create a "Nucky" character that differed from the image of the real man or the one played by James Gandolfini.
