Short description

What's left behind the scenes
- In the 8th season, the name of Oliver Saxon (the neurosurgeon) was likely taken from the world-renowned brain specialist Oliver Sacks, author of the book 'The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat'.
- In real life, Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter married in 2008. However, they divorced two years later, citing irreconcilable differences. Nevertheless, they have maintained a good relationship, both on and off screen.
- Actor Michael C. Hall was diagnosed with cancer during the filming of the fourth season, but he kept it a secret until production ended. Executive producer Sara Colleton said in an interview that Hall did this for two reasons: first, he didn't want everyone on set to pity him endlessly, and second, he feared it might halt the production of the series.
- Composer Daniel Licht originally wrote Dexter's theme as part of the soundtrack for the film 'Book of the Dead' (1993).
- The actors who played Rita, Doakes, and LaGuerta didn't know it was their final season until they began filming their death scenes. The creators feared that any prior knowledge of this nature might affect the actors' performances. They were so concerned about Rita's death that they even distributed fake endings to mislead people.
- During filming, Michael C. Hall accidentally crashed Dexter's boat, the 'Slice of Life', into a pier, which cost the show's creators 8,000 dollars.
- In Season 7, Episode 2, while Randall is eating ice cream during a conversation with Dexter, he takes a bite, but in the next shot, the ice cream is whole again.
- Zayas's son, David Zayas Jr., looks so much like his father that he even stood in for him as Batista in several episodes of the 8th season.
- Dexter was supposed to die at the end of the series, but the Showtime network did not allow it.

- In the sixth episode of the first season ('Return to the Sender'), Dexter deletes the name he used to obtain tranquilizers from the police database. In this database, he is listed under the pseudonym 'Patrick Bateman M.D.' Patrick Bateman is a character from the books of American writer Bret Easton Ellis and the protagonist of the novel 'American Psycho'—also a brutal killer and maniac.
- Due to strict child labor laws in film and television, twins Luke Andrew Kruntchev and Evan George Kruntchev, who played Harrison (the son of Dexter and Rita), took turns on set.
- The author, Jeff Lindsay, was initially against Michael C. Hall playing Dexter. Fortunately, the show's creators thought otherwise. After seeing Hall's performance in just one scene, Lindsay immediately changed his mind, stating that he was "absolutely wonderful" in the role.
- Dexter's boat is named "Slice of Life"; in English, this phrase can refer to a "naturalistic depiction" (in art or literature).
- Julie Benz originally auditioned for the role of Debra Morgan, which was ultimately given to Jennifer Carpenter.
