What's left behind the scenes
- The series is frequently criticized for the allegedly incorrect accents of the characters. It is argued that people in 1920s Birmingham did not speak as they do today. Helen McCrory, who played Aunt Polly, stated that the characters' pronunciation and speech patterns are consistent with the Birmingham dialect of the 1920s. However, UK viewers suspect that the accents were intentionally softened to make the series more accessible to audiences in the United States.
- Filming took place primarily in Liverpool, Merseyside, and London. Whenever possible, filming was organized in Birmingham and the West Midlands (for example, at the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley); however, by now, too few locations remain in Birmingham that even remotely resemble how they looked in the 1920s.
- Paul Anderson plays the older brother of Cillian Murphy's character. In real life, however, Murphy is a year and a half older than Anderson.
- During the filming up until the end of Season 2, Cillian Murphy smoked over 3,000 cigarettes. The actor told journalists that the cigarettes he smokes contain neither tobacco nor nicotine, so they are not addictive.
- David Bowie (1947-2016) was a great fan of the series during his lifetime and gave permission for his songs to be used in the third season.
- Despite what is claimed in the series, the Peaky Blinders were at the peak of their power in the 1890s; by the 1920s, another gang had taken the dominant position in Birmingham's criminal underworld.
- In the third season, Jan Beeut and Gaite Jansen play gangsters from Georgia. In reality, the actor and actress are from Belgium and the Netherlands, respectively. While pretending to speak Russian, they are actually speaking Dutch.
- At the very beginning of the casting process for the project, showrunner and writer Steven Knight met with Jason Statham and Cillian Murphy in Los Angeles regarding the role of Thomas Shelby. Initially, he considered Statham for the part, but ultimately chose Murphy.
- In reality, members of the Peaky Blinders gang in the 1890s were unlikely to have worn razor blades in their hats, as they were considered luxury items at the time. This misconception originates from John Douglas's 1977 novel 'A Walk Down Summer Lane'.
- Cillian Murphy came up with Thomas Shelby's manner of walking himself; it became a habit that persisted even after filming ended. It eventually took his wife telling him to walk normally for him to stop.
- The series' title stems from the gang members' custom of wearing flat caps instead of the hats worn by more respectable gentlemen.
- In the first episode of season 4, Tommy Shelby mentions leaving treats for Santa and his reindeer, Rudolph. The series is set in the 1920s, but Rudolph didn't first appear until 1939. Furthermore, in those years in the UK, 'Santa' was known exclusively as 'Father Christmas,' and the American term 'Santa' only entered the vocabulary of the younger generation under the influence of television and cinema starting in the early 1990s.
- Tommy Shelby smokes cigarettes that simply didn't exist before 1954. At that time, all cigarettes were produced without filters.
