What's left behind the scenes
- Billy Bob Thornton came up with his character's hairstyle himself.
- Screenwriter Noah Hawley and director Randall Einhorn confirmed that the events of the series and the film take place in the same universe.
- Joel and Ethan Coen, although credited as executive producers, did not actually participate in the production of the series. According to Noah Hawley, they simply read the script and gave their approval for the use of their names.
- Like the film, each episode begins with overlaid text: "This is a true story. The events described in the series took place in Minnesota in 2006 [1979]. At the request of the survivors, the names of the characters have been changed. Out of respect for the deceased, everything is shown as it actually happened." In reality, the events of the series did not happen.
- The title of each episode of the first season plays on a koan (a short story, question, or dialogue, usually lacking a logical basis and containing algorithms or paradoxes accessible to intuitive understanding; a phenomenon specific to Zen Buddhism), an allegory, or a philosophical paradox.
- Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays former inmate Nikki Swango in the third season, agreed to participate in the series without even knowing what role she would be playing. She naively assumed she would be playing a "sweet female police officer from Minnesota" or an "equally sweet housewife from Minnesota."
- One of the directors, Noah Hawley, stated that Mr. Venca (like the actor who played him, Russell Harvard, he is deaf and communicates via sign language) was conceived and introduced into the series' storyline based on Hawley's own memories and his life in Austin, Texas, near a school for the deaf.
- All three seasons feature the same building, but each time in a different capacity. In the first season, it is the office of the character played by Martin Freeman; in the second, it is the butcher shop where Jesse Plemons' character works; and in the third, it is the apartment building where Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character resides.
- In the second season, Kirsten Dunst's character dreams of attending a 'Lifespring' seminar. 'Lifespring' was a real organization founded in the mid-1970s as part of the Human Potential Movement that emerged in the United States at the time. 'Lifespring' existed until the mid-1990s. Numerous complaints were filed against it, labeling it a Ponzi scheme or accusing it of the deaths of two dozen participants.
- Every day before filming, Ewan McGregor spent over two hours in the makeup chair. He even gained weight for one episode where he had to appear half-naked in a certain scene, but shortly after filming that scene, he lost the weight again.
- When Mrs. Nygaard lifts the spoon, it is in her left hand. When she lowers it, the spoon is already in her right.
- In the sixth episode, when Lorne Malvo fires a sniper rifle, it can be seen that all the windows are covered with newspapers, yet Malvo shoots using a sniper scope.
- In the second episode of the first season, while Gus Grimly is having dinner with his daughter, the amount of ketchup in the bottle constantly changes.
- In the tenth episode of the first season, when Lester arrives at the scene of Linda's murder, an extra playing a police officer behind Nygaard smiles, struggling to hold back laughter at Lester's screams.
- In the 10th episode of the 3rd season at the 27-minute mark, one of the main characters, Emmett Stussy, stops on the road due to a car malfunction; later, at the 35-minute mark after a shootout with a police officer, he gets into the car and drives away instantly without any difficulty, ignoring the previously shown malfunction.
- Third season, beginning of the 2nd episode. The main character is flipping through old books. When she is holding the book 'Ranger Telepath,' it is visible that the text in the book is upside down.
