Short description

Six years before Saul Goodman meets Walter White. We meet him when the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and, often, against Jimmy, is “fixer” Mike Ehrmantraut. The series tracks Jimmy’s transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts “criminal” in “criminal lawyer".

What's left behind the scenes

  • Saul's yellow car is a Suzuki Cultus Crescent sedan, a model produced between 1995 and 1998. It is known as the Suzuki Esteem in the US and as the Suzuki Baleno in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
  • In the episode 'Five-O', Mike gets off a train that is believed to have arrived from Philadelphia. In reality, he is stepping off the 'Rail Runner'—a local commuter train that runs between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
  • The AMC channel announced in June 2014 that the series had been renewed for a second season, more than seven months before the premiere of the pilot episode.
  • Jimmy McGill is mentioned in the series Breaking Bad (2008-2013). Saul Goodman stated that McGill is his real last name.
  • The series is set in 2002, six years before the events of Breaking Bad (2008-2013) and seven years before Saul's first appearance.
  • In the episode "Marco" of the series "Better Call Saul," which premiered on April 6, 2015, Jimmy convinces a girl that he is Kevin Costner. In the episode "Kafkaesque" of the series "Breaking Bad," which premiered on May 16, 2010, Jimmy says the following: "If you try hard enough, you can convince anyone of anything. I once told a girl I was Kevin Costner, and she believed me because at that moment, I believed it myself."
  • During filming—for example, for "ground-up" shots or shots from "inside a coffee cup"—a very compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 camera was used.
  • The style of the opening shots in each episode differs from all the others.
  • The nail salon where Jimmy conducts his business and which he later tries to sell to Jesse Pinkman is located on Juan Tabo Boulevard, where Gale's apartment is also situated.
  • Vince Gilligan stated in an interview that he initially intended to write the script for only the first season of the series and leave subsequent seasons to Peter Gould. However, working on the first season gave him such pleasure that he decided not to step aside and remain with the series until the end.
  • Michael Mckenney and Bob Odenkirk appeared in the sketch show Mr. Show with Bob and David in the episode "Life Is Precious and God and the Bible" (October 26, 1998).
  • In the episode "Bingo," which premiered on March 16, 2015, Saul sits on a bench by a wall where portraits of wanted criminals are posted. Mike then appears, and they have a meeting with two detectives from Philadelphia. The entire scene is filmed from a distance, without a single close-up shot of the actors. This was done so that the viewer could focus on the photographs of the criminals. The fact is that almost all the people depicted in the photos appear on screen as "bad guys" in subsequent episodes of the same season.
  • The space used for Jimmy's "temporary" office is the same one that he, as Saul Goodman, offered Jesse Pinkman for money laundering in Breaking Bad (2008-2013).
  • The series is a spin-off (prequel) of the popular series Breaking Bad (2008-2013).
  • The series title is borrowed from the episode "Better Call Saul" from the second season of "Breaking Bad" (2008-2013) and its promotional clip, which features Saul Goodman's first on-screen appearance.
  • The action of the black-and-white intro to the episode "Uno" takes place in the state of Nebraska. In 2013, Alexander Payne's black-and-white tragicomedy "Nebraska," starring Bob Odenkirk, was released.
  • In English, the titles of all episodes in the first season end with the letter "O." The only exception was the episode "Alpine Shepherdess," which premiered on March 2, 2015. Initially, the episode was going to be titled "Jell-O," but the trademark owner, Kraft Foods, did not grant permission for its use.
  • The series was filmed simultaneously using two 4K digital cameras.
  • The first episode of "Better Call Saul" drew an audience of 6.9 million viewers. In the entire history of the AMC channel, only the first episode of "Fear the Walking Dead" (2015) drew a larger audience (10.1 million viewers).
  • The series takes place in 2002. In the episode "Miho," Tuco uses a Taurus Raging Judge M513 six-shot revolver, which only entered production in 2010.
  • In the episode "Pimento," which premiered on March 30, 2015, the role of the hitman was played by Stephen Ogg, best known for voicing Trevor Philips, one of the characters in the video game "Grand Theft Auto V."
  • In one of the scenes from the episode 'Uno', which premiered on February 8, 2015, a coat and hat can be seen in the background. They are suspiciously similar to those worn by Heisenberg—the criminal alias of Walter White, the main character of the series Breaking Bad (2008-2013).
  • When filming in small spaces—such as Saul's tiny office or his car—a RED Dragon digital camera with 4K resolution was used.
  • Jimmy McGill has a keychain on his car keys that is strikingly similar to Walter White's keychain in the Breaking Bad (2008-2013) episode 'Felina'.
  • When people on skateboards ride behind a truck, holding onto its side, they pass Juan Tabo Boulevard. This is the same street where Gale Boetticher lived in the series Breaking Bad (2008-2013).
  • Breaking Bad (2008-2013) was shot on 35mm film, while its prequel, Better Call Saul, was shot on 4K digital cameras.
  • The events of the series' first episode take place on May 15, 2002, a few days before the premiere of the final episode of The X-Files, a show that Vince Gilligan helped create.
  • In the episode "Nacho," which aired on February 16, 2015, Mike mentions the Pine Barrens during a conversation with Saul about the best places to hide bodies. The Pine Barrens is a forested area in southern New Jersey where criminal gangs actually hide the bodies of their victims. In an episode of the same name from the series "The Sopranos" (1999-2007), Paulie and Christopher bury the body of a Russian mobster there.
  • Raymond Cruz plays the drug lord Tuco Salamanca in both Breaking Bad and the prequel Better Call Saul.
  • Early in production, it was intended for the series to be a 30-minute comedy, but it was ultimately decided to switch to a one-hour format.
  • Initially, the second season consisted of 13 episodes, but it was shortened to 10 at the request of the producers.
