It is known that Paul Ekman, a psychology professor at the University of California, served as both the prototype for the main character, Cal Lightman, and as a consultant for the series. Paul has dedicated over 30 years to studying the theory of deception and is the world's leading expert in this field.
At the very beginning of Season 1, Episode 11, when the police are running across the roof, the camera operator's shadow can be seen.
In the pilot episode, Emily—Lightman's daughter—is played by Kay Panabaker. The episode was later reshot, and the role of Emily was given to Haley McFarland.
