What's left behind the scenes

  • In the train scene (episode 9), several different 'FSociety' stickers can be seen on the screen, referring to the hacker group Elliot belongs to.
  • The actors were instructed not to look at Christian Slater or react to his words in scenes where Slater and Malek are in the same room, because everything he says is merely a product of Elliot's imagination, or the words are being spoken by Elliot himself.
  • At the end of episode 9, Elliot and Wellick enter an arcade to a cover of the song "Where Is My Mind" (1988) by the alternative rock band The Pixies. The show's creators admitted that they drew a lot of inspiration from David Fincher's film 'Fight Club' (1999), which also ends with this track.
  • One of the arcade machines is called 'Dark Seoul.' This is a play on the title of the 'Dark Souls' video game series (Seoul and soul are homophones in English).
  • When Elliot meets Mr. Robot on the train (episode 1), the series creator Sam Esmail can be seen on the right side of the frame.
  • When hacking into other people's computers, Elliot and Darlene use the high-level general-purpose programming language Python.
  • At the end of each episode title in the first season, popular video file formats are used, such as .mov, .mpeg, .mkv, etc. In the second season, the creators chose to use other popular file formats in the titles, such as .tc (TrueCrypt disk image encryption), .ksd (Native Instruments Massive audio preset format), and others.
  • In 99 out of 100 cases, Elliot, played by Rami Malek, and the other characters in the series use the Linux/Unix operating system. The main character's home computer has Kali Linux (or one of its variants) and the GNOME desktop environment installed. Tyrell mentions this during their first meeting in the pilot episode.
  • The logo of 'E Corp' (Evil Corp) is similar to the Enron logo. This Houston-based corporation went bankrupt in 2001 after its management was caught in financial fraud.
  • On one of the CDs, Elliot writes 'Wish You Were Here' (the title of a 1975 Pink Floyd album). His music collection includes other Pink Floyd albums as well. In one episode, a mug with the words 'Dark Side of the Moon' (a 1973 album) appears on screen. In the sixth episode, Elliot mentions Pink Floyd among other bands during a conversation about music.
  • In episode 5 of season 1, when Angela visits her father, her right leg changes position several times during a jump cut during the dialogue at the 28-minute mark.
  • The way the letter 'E' is written in the 'E Corp' logo is reminiscent of its depiction in the Dell company logo.
  • In a flashback, Elliot's father asks if he wants to watch the movie 'Timecop' (1994) or 'Stargate' (1994). Gloria Reuben, who plays Krista Gordon in the series, appeared in the film 'Timecop'.
  • Rami Malek was cast in the lead role upon the recommendation of Emmy Rossum, then-girlfriend of the series creator Sam Esmail, who had seen his performance in the miniseries "The Pacific" (2010).
  • The film was shot in Manhattan, Coney Island, and Kensington (Brooklyn).
  • In the season finale, Elliot speaks with Joanna Wellick. With a sinister smile, she says something in Danish, to which he replies, "Sorry, I didn't understand a word of that." This is the only episode in the entire season where foreign language speech is not accompanied by subtitles. Joanna says, "Hvis du har gjort ham noget, sa slar jeg dig ihjel" — which translates as "If you have done something to him, I will kill you."
  • In the arcade gallery, one machine can be seen with the game 'Intergalactic Planetary.' This is the very game that inspired the American hip-hop group Beastie Boys to create their 1998 hit 'Intergalactic.'
  • In Tony Scott's film 'True Romance' (1993), Christian Slater rides a roller coaster in a park with a character named Elliot. In the series 'Mr. Robot', Slater and a character named Elliot ride a Ferris wheel.
  • Elliot's fish is named Qwerty. These are the first six letters on the left of the top row of a standard keyboard.
  • The airing of the season finale was postponed due to a tragedy that occurred that day in the state of Virginia.
  • When speaking with each other, Tyrell and Joanna Wellick speak in Swedish (Tyrell) and Danish (Joanna).
