What's left behind the scenes

  • Actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who plays Fish Mooney, arrived at her audition leading a person on a leash.
  • Actress, dancer, and model Camren Bicondova, who played Selina Kyle, incorporated her dancing skills into some of the character's movements.
  • In one of the scenes, Thomas Elliot (the alter ego of the villain known as Hush) is portrayed as a bully who teases Bruce and mocks the death of his parents. In the comics, however, Elliot and Bruce were very close as children until a single incident caused by Elliot drove a wedge between them.
  • Ben McKenzie and Morena Baccarin play a couple in the series. In reality, they had been dating for a long time, and in early 2016, the actress was expecting a child.
  • Ben McKenzie was injured while filming the scene where his character hits his head against a concrete pillar.
  • Morena Baccarin's character stated in one episode that she was pregnant. At the time, the actress herself was pregnant by Ben McKenzie, with whom she had been in a domestic partnership since March 2015.
  • Robin Lord Taylor claims that he drew inspiration from Danny DeVito's performance as the Penguin in Tim Burton's 'Batman Returns' (1992).
  • The costumes for Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin) were created by Martin Greenfield, whose clientele includes presidents of the United States.
  • Tommy Elliot, played by Cole Valley, is the alter ego of the villain known as Hush.
  • The head of the crime syndicate, Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), is a new character in the DC Comics universe created specifically for the series.
  • In the original version of the script, Gordon and Bullock were supposed to shoot Patty and Doug, the Puppeteer's assistants, played by Lily Taylor and Frank Wiley. Subsequently, however, the script was rewritten, and Patty and Doug were arrested rather than shot.
  • At the start of work on the first season, a report appeared online stating that shortly before filming, screen tests were held on set during which a fair-skinned actress was made up to look like a person of color to perform a stunt in her place. Making up doubles and stunt performers to look like people of a different skin color contradicts the regulations of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. A Guild representative called the incident "likely reprehensible," stating, "This practice is unacceptable always and everywhere, especially in New York, where there are plenty of well-trained doubles and stunt performers of any skin color." The scandal reached the management of Warner Bros., which initially attempted to hush up the incident and let it slide, but was eventually forced to issue the following statement: "A mistake was made this week in the use of a double for an actress. The mistake has been corrected. We apologize."
  • Jerome Valeska is a reference to the mob boss Salvatore Valestro from the animated series "The New Batman Adventures" (1997-1999).
  • For the exterior of Wayne Manor, the production used the Webb Institute building, which Joel Schumacher also used as Wayne Manor in the films 'Batman Forever' (1995) and 'Batman & Robin' (1997). The address of the mansion is '1007 Mountain Drive.' The same address is mentioned in the 'Batman: The Animated Series' (1992).
  • Edward Nygma's real name is actually Edward Nashton. The comic book character adopted the pseudonyms E. Nygma (a play on the English word 'enigma') and The Riddler.
  • Robin Lord Taylor is a natural blonde, so he has to dye his hair every two weeks for the role. The actor complains that his hair grows back very quickly, and when the blonde roots show, it gives the impression that his hairstyle is 'hovering' slightly above his head.
  • A massive bat-winged gargoyle can be seen on the Gotham City Police Department building.
  • In Wayne's office, there is a bust of William Shakespeare on a shelf—exactly like the one that opened the secret passage from the office to the cave in the old Batman and Robin adventure series.
  • The massive French Neoclassical painting that occasionally appears in the shots of Wayne Manor is 'The Oath of the Horatii' (1784) by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). The Horatii belonged to the ruling class of ancient Rome. The painting depicts the moment three brothers swear to defend Rome at the cost of their own lives. Only one of them survives the battle and puts the enemies to flight. It is believed that the Horatii brothers symbolize the Wayne family—Thomas and Martha fall in a brutal struggle, while Bruce survives and emerges victorious.
  • Gotham was filmed in New York, some of whose landmarks and sites are easily recognizable on screen. As the plot progressed, however, the series creators began to use computer graphics more frequently when showing the city, which added to Gotham's authenticity. Computer technology was used to create buildings that matched the image of the city established in the comics.
