What's left behind the scenes

  • The series is based on George R.R. Martin's novel series 'A Song of Ice and Fire' (1996–present).
  • Filming of the pilot episode took nearly a month, from October 24, 2009, to November 19, 2009.
  • Shortly after filming of the pilot episode concluded, it became known that actress Jennifer Elle (in the role of Catelyn Stark) would be replaced by Michelle Fairley; additionally, the young actress Tamzin Merchant, who played one of the key roles of Daenerys Targaryen, was replaced by Emilia Clarke. This necessitated the reshooting of several scenes, including the prologue; however, due to scheduling conflicts, not all actors from the pilot were able to return for reshoots, requiring the replacement of actors for three more characters. The director of the first version of the pilot, Tom McCarthy, was also unable to return for the reshoots and was replaced; his name is not mentioned in the credits.
  • Principal photography for the first season took place at Paint Hall Studios in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as well as in Malta (instead of the originally planned Morocco). In Malta, filming took place in the cities of Mdina and Valletta.
  • Gerard Butler, Viggo Mortensen, and Sam Neill were considered for the role of Eddard Stark, but David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and George R.R. Martin agreed that Sean Bean should play the Warden of the North.
  • Tim Roth and David Thewlis were considered for the role of Davos Seaworth.
  • Gillian Anderson was considered for the role of Catelyn Stark.
  • For the dining scene in the Castle Black refectory, a porridge so unappetizing was cooked that the actor playing Pyp refused to eat it, and the actor playing Grenn struggles to swallow it on camera.
  • In George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series, Arya Stark is left-handed. Maisie Williams, who is right-handed and plays Arya in the adaptation, learned to use her left hand proficiently for the sake of authenticity.
  • The series contains dialogue in constructed languages foreign to Westeros—Dothraki and Valyrian. To develop them, HBO hired a linguist who created unique dictionaries, pronunciation, and grammatical structures for each language.
  • Emilia Clarke did not dye her hair for her role, but wore a wig instead.
  • The southern scenes for the second season were filmed in the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia, and on the neighboring island of Lokrum, instead of Malta. The scenes at Fist of the First Men and Frostfangs were filmed in November 2011 in Iceland.
  • During the breaks between seasons of Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams appeared in the series Doctor Who.
  • Sam Heughan auditioned for various roles in the series, including Renly Baratheon, Loras Tyrell, and some of the brothers of the Night's Watch. Ultimately, Heughan signed a contract for the dramatic fantasy series Outlander (2014), which also stars Tobias Menzies, who played Edmure Tully in the 3rd and 6th seasons of Game of Thrones.
  • Izzie Meikle-Small auditioned for the role of Sansa Stark.
  • Offers to play the lead roles in the series were made to Dominic West and a British actress named Perdita Weeks.
  • The film 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (J.J. Abrams, 2015) features 8 actors and actresses who appear in the series 'Game of Thrones'. These are Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth in the series), Mark Stanley (Grenn), Max von Sydow (Three-Eyed Raven), Thomas Sangster (Jojen Reed), Miltos Errolimus (Syrio Forel), Jessica Henwick (Nymeria Sand), Iman Elliot (Marillion), and Hannah John-Kamen (Dothraki widow).
  • At least 11 actors from the series appeared in the TV series 'Ripper Street' (2012). These are Jerome Flynn (Bronn and Sergeant Drake, respectively), Ian McElhinney (Barristan Selmy and Theodore Swift), Kristian Nairn (Hodor and Barnaby), Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont and Madoc Faulkner), Clive Russell (Brynden 'Blackfish' Tully and Chief Inspector Ebberline), Anton Lesser (Qyburn and Dr. Karl Crabb), Francis Magee (Yoren and Davis), Michael McAlhannon (Roose Bolton and Monroe), Joseph Mawle (Benjen Stark and D.I. Shine), Philip Arditti (The Shepherd and Marvel), and Dean-Charles Chapman (King Tommen and Harry Ward).
  • Tricia Helfer auditioned for the role of Cersei Lannister.
  • The first television series in the Dolby Atmos sound system.
  • Jamie Bamber auditioned for the role of Jaime Lannister.
  • In the pilot episode, Iain McNice played the role of Illyrio Mopatis, but due to a busy schedule with other projects, he was forced to leave the cast of Game of Thrones. He was replaced as the Magister of the Free City of Pentos by Roger Allam.
  • Derek Halligan was cast as Alliser Thorne, but he left the project before filming began, and the role went to Owen Teale.
  • Benjamin Gar auditioned for the role of Trystane Martell in the fifth season of the series.
  • Sean Bean and Carice van Houten starred together in Christopher Smith's supernatural thriller Black Death (2010).
  • At one time, Rachel Hurd-Wood was considered for the role of Sansa Stark.
  • Initially, Simon Fisher-Becker was cast as the High Septon, the head of the Faith of the Seven—which the actor himself confirmed in an interview—however, David Verhey eventually appeared on screen in the role.
  • Sean Bean and Kit Harington appeared together in Michael J. Bassett's horror film Silent Hill: Revelation (2012).
  • Danny Dyer admitted in one of his interviews that he auditioned for a role in the series Game of Thrones.
  • Elena Satine auditioned for the role of Daenerys Targaryen, but the part went to Emilia Clarke.
  • Season 2, Episode 5. Catelyn Stark is talking to Brienne in the forest; the left side of Brienne's white horse is covered in mud. In the next shot, the horse is completely clean.
  • In Season 8, Episode 4, a cardboard coffee cup can be seen on the table during one of the feast scenes. A few days after the episode aired, HBO digitally removed the paper cup from the version available on HBO Go and other streaming services.
