What's left behind the scenes
- When Rick flips through channels from alternative universes, a show featuring an alternative 'Game of Thrones' flashes by, where Tyrion Lannister is taller than everyone else.
- The image of a galloping horse in the Smiths' house is a parody of Eadweard Muybridge's (1830-1904) 'Horse in Motion' (1878).
- In the 7th episode of Season 2, when the alien explains to Jerry and Beth how their subconscious is used, a scientific slide appears on the central monitor showing the character Bill Cipher from the series 'Gravity Falls'. Notably, this antagonist frequently entered the characters' subconscious to obtain necessary information.
- In the 1st episode of Season 2, the four-dimensional beings are a reference to the creatures from 'The Langoliers', a television miniseries (1995) based on the novella of the same name (1990) by Stephen King from the collection 'Four Past Midnight', in which the main characters find themselves outside of time and watch as certain creatures devour reality.
- Jerry's car is the station wagon from Harold Ramis's comedy 'National Lampoon's Vacation' (1983).
- The ninth episode of the first season features a character who is a reference to Stephen King's book 'Needful Things,' as well as to Ray Bradbury's novel 'Something Wicked This Way Comes.'
- In Season 1, Episode 10, as Rick flees from copies of himself from other dimensions, a mug, a pen, and a notebook belonging to Stan Pines—a character from 'Gravity Falls' (2012)—can be seen falling out of one of the portals; he loses these items in the episode 'Society of the Blind Eye'.
- The character known as Birdperson is based on one of the characters from the series 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' (1979-1981).
- The clock on the wall in Rick's garage lab always shows 2:00 PM. The only exception is the 3rd episode of Season 1, where the clock shows 3:00 PM.
- The image of sunflowers in the Smiths' house is a parody of Vincent van Gogh's (1853-1890) sunflowers.
- In the second episode of the first season, in the scene where Rick and Morty enter Mrs. Pancakes' dream, two gnomes from 'Gravity Falls' (2012) can be spotted. Also, in the middle of the episode, Morty watches a cartoon about a cat that resembles Garfield.
- In 2007, Justin Roiland drew a supposedly official animated series about the adventures of Doc Brown and Marty McFly from the 'Back to the Future' trilogy, which was actually a grotesque parody. Later, the author renamed the characters Rick and Morty and created a standalone series in which the influence of the famous trilogy is evident.
- In Season 1, Episode 5, when Rick lures the clone ghosts of Morty's parents into a trap device, it can be noted that this trap is a complete replica of the ghost trap from the animated series 'The Real Ghostbusters' (1997).
- In the third episode of the second season, Rick watches a show that references the series 'Community' (2009), which was also created by Dan Harmon.
- The image of an umbrella in the Smiths' house is a parody of one of René Magritte's (1898-1967) paintings.
