Short description

Disregard for alchemy’s laws ripped half of Edward Elric’s limbs from his body and left his brother Alphonse’s soul clinging to a suit of armor. To restore what was lost, the brothers seek the Philosopher’s Stone. Enemies and allies – the corrupt military, the Homunculi, and foreign alchemists – will alter the Elric brothers course, but their purpose will remain unchanged and their bond unbreakable.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In April 2010, Animage magazine ranked the series sixth on its list of the best series that premiered between April 2009 and March 2010.
  • The world of 'Fullmetal Alchemist' is set in an early 20th-century atmosphere.
  • The effect that occurs when an alchemist attempts a transmutation for which they lack the necessary source material—that is, when they try to take more than they give—is called a rebound.
  • Alchemists can transmute one substance into another and change the shape of objects; they can also merge living beings to create chimeras or instill a soul into inanimate objects using a blood seal. Nevertheless, there is a fundamental law of alchemy—the law of equivalent exchange—which states that if an alchemist wants to obtain something, they must sacrifice something of equal value.
  • According to an Anime News Network reviewer, the repetition of events from the first anime in the early episodes reduced the suspense. Mania Entertainment claims that the main advantages of the second adaptation are that the characters' actions differ from those in the 2003 version and that it features its own storyline taken from the manga.
  • An alchemist who has come into contact with Truth can perform transmutations without drawing an alchemical circle. In the Xing Empire, a slightly different variety of alchemy called Alkahestry is used.
  • About the manga: The original manga by Hiromu Arakawa consists of 108 chapters, published separately in 27 volumes. The first chapter was released on July 12, 2001, in Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine, and the final chapter appeared in the June 2010 issue.
  • The plot of the manga and the 2009 anime also features the Immortal Army, an army of homunculi created by the military and scientists of Amestris for world conquest (they are essentially dolls with human physiology).
  • The final episodes were rated higher than those of the first series. Critics found the ending to be good; Mark Thomas called it the "perfect ending to an outstanding series."
  • Many of the people the brothers encounter on their journey are unfriendly toward them specifically because of the title held by Edward Elric.
  • Several art books have been released based on the anime and manga.
  • Selim Bradley was an ordinary human in the first anime; however, in the original manga and in this series, he is a homunculus named Pride.
  • A homunculus named Father is identical in appearance to Van Hohenheim, the father of Edward and Alphonse.
  • In the first anime, Hohenheim leaves his family so that his loved ones would not have to witness his death. In this anime, it is the opposite: Hohenheim is immortal and leaves his family in search of a way to die.
  • In the world of 'Fullmetal Alchemist,' alchemy is mastered by those characters who have deeply studied chemistry and physics.
  • It was intended that the homunculus soldiers would be able to fight under any conditions and circumstances, while also being largely impervious to enemy weapons; however, as a result, instead of an army of soldiers, Amestris received a crowd of bloodthirsty zombies. This fact is clearly demonstrated in the episode 'The Immortal Army'.
  • The 2009 anime is as close as possible to the original manga.
  • The citizens of Amestris call state alchemists "army dogs."
  • Alchemists are forbidden from creating gold; furthermore, attempting to create a human organism is under a tacit ban.
  • To perform a transmutation, an alchemical circle defining the essence of the transmutation must be drawn, which the alchemist then activates.
  • Homunculi are artificial humans created through alchemy. They can be recognized by the Ouroboros symbol on one part of their body. Homunculi can think, feel, and speak, making them indistinguishable from ordinary humans in these regards. They do not age and possess superhuman abilities (such as shapeshifting, invulnerability, and others). Homunculi can be created in various ways.
  • The main theme of the anime series "Brothers" is performed in Russian by the Vera Choir.
