What's left behind the scenes

  • The role of Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier was originally written for an older actress, with the intention of casting Angela Lansbury. When she was unable to accept the invitation, the role was rewritten for a younger actress, and Gillian Anderson was cast.
  • NBC began working on the project back in 2011, when Bryan Fuller was brought in to write the pilot script in November. The network provided financial support for the project even before the script was completed. On February 14, 2012, the script was approved by producers, who ultimately ordered a full season of 13 episodes, having been impressed by Fuller's work.
  • At the beginning of the sixth episode of the second season, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) quotes the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Mads Mikkelsen played Stravinsky in the film 'Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky' (2009).
  • Bryan Fuller originally wanted to cast Lee Pace in the role of Will Graham. He was also unable to appear as a guest star in the first season due to his Broadway commitments.
  • The car driven by Hugh Dancy's character in one of the scenes of the third episode of the third season is a 1986 VAZ-2121 'Niva' SUV.
  • Hannibal (played by Mads Mikkelsen) and Hugh Dancy (who played Will) occasionally discussed Hannibal's use of the information storage method known as the "memory palace." This is not an invention of the show's creators or Thomas Harris—the screenwriter and author of the source novel—who mentions this technique in his books. This method actually exists and has been known since the time of the Roman Empire.
  • In the second episode of the first season, actress Chelan Simmons introduces herself as Gretchen Speck, married name Horowitz. In another Bryan Fuller series, 'Wonderfalls' (2004), Chelan Simmons' character is named Gretchen Speck-Horowitz.
  • Hugh Dancy recommended Mads Mikkelsen for the role of Dr. Lecter.
  • David Tennant auditioned for the lead role in the series. Executive producer Bryan Fuller was so impressed by Tennant's audition that, although he denied him the role of Hannibal, he wanted to bring Tennant back as a guest star in the role of a crazed serial killer.
  • Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller had a seven-year plan for the series. He outlined it as follows: "In the first season, we have a strange bromance between Will and Hannibal. The second season will be an unpleasant breakup between them. The third season will be a flight toward sharp edges. The fourth season will be 'Red Dragon.' The fifth season will cover the time of 'The Silence of the Lambs.' The sixth season will be 'Hannibal.' In the seventh season, it would be interesting to see Will Graham and a Clarice Starling-type character team up to finally give Hannibal his comeuppance."
  • Mads Mikkelsen prepared all the dishes in the series himself. He was coached in cooking by food stylist Janice Poon.
