Short description

When they were boys, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. Subsequently, their father raised them to be soldiers. He taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America ... and he taught them how to kill it. Now, the Winchester brothers crisscross the country in their '67 Chevy Impala, battling every kind of supernatural threat they encounter along the way.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jensen Ackles was originally cast in the role of Sam Winchester.
  • Initially, the idea for the series was somewhat different. It was envisioned that the main character would be a newspaper reporter investigating mysterious urban legends and writing about them in his column. However, it was later decided to go with the plot about two brothers. The series' protagonists were named after the characters from Jack Kerouac's novel 'On the Road' — Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty. However, the creator Eric Kripke did not like the name Sal and decided to change it to Sam.
  • During the filming of the second season, Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) broke his arm while performing a stunt.
  • Sam Winchester is 4 years younger than his brother Dean; Jared Padalecki is also 4 years younger than Jensen Ackles.
  • In the 18th episode of the second season, titled "Hollywood Babylon," Sam and Dean take a tour of a movie studio, during which the guide says: "To your right are the sets for the town where the series 'Gilmore Girls' (2000) is filmed; if we're lucky, we might even get to talk to the actors." The irony is that Jared Padalecki, who plays Sam Winchester, is one of the actors in 'Gilmore Girls'.
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan (John Winchester) is only 12 years older than his onscreen son, Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester).
  • Geographical and factual inaccuracies can be noticed in some episodes. This is because while the series is set in various U.S. states, it is actually filmed in Vancouver, Canada.
  • Dean and Sam often introduce themselves using aliases. For the most part, these names belong to real people or movie characters. For example, in the episode "Dead in the Water," the brothers introduce themselves as Agents Ford and Hamill—the surnames of Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, actors from the 'Star Wars' saga. In the episode "Nightmare," Dean and Sam call themselves Fathers Simmons and Freely—both surnames belong to guitarists from the American rock band KISS. In the episode "Night Turn," the brothers' fake IDs identify them as Special Agents Han Solo (Sam) and Jack Ryan (Dean). Han Solo is a 'Star Wars' character, and Jack Ryan is a character created by author Tom Clancy. Both of these roles were played in cinema by Harrison Ford.
  • In the episode "House of Horrors," when Ed and Harry wrestle for the camera, a "part" of one of the camera operators accidentally appears in the shot.
  • Originally, John Winchester was planned to be named Jack.
  • Keanu Reeves was offered the role of John Winchester.
  • Katie Cassidy originally auditioned for the role of the thief Bela Talbot, but was ultimately cast as the demon hunter Ruby.
  • Ashton Kutcher and Josh Hartnett were considered to play brothers Dean and Sam Winchester.
  • In the episode "Hookman," while Dean is walking through the cemetery, a headstone can be seen with an inscription in Russian: Sergey Valeryevich Petrov.
  • In the first episode of the first season, while explaining to Jessica why he has to leave for a short while, Sam says: 'Dad went hunting and took Jim, Jack, and Jose with him.' Sam is listing the names of alcoholic drinks (Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Jose Cuervo), hinting that his father has simply gone on a drinking binge.
  • In the first episode of the first season, when Dean is asked for his name at the police station, he says 'Newgent. Ted Newgent.' Ted Nugent is an American guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer. One of his songs, 'Strangehold,' is featured in the first episode of the second season.
  • It can be noted that in various episodes (2-04 'Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things', 4-11 'Family Remains', 5-11 'Sam, Interrupted'), Dean borrows aliases from the screenwriters of the movie 'Fletch' (1985). In the last mentioned episode, the brothers introduce themselves as Stanwick and Babar (Alan Stanwick is a character from that movie, named after a comedy actor, and Babar—like the little elephant—is a fictional name Fletch uses while in the hospital).
  • In episode 5 of season 5, Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) tells Paris Hilton that he hasn't seen the movie 'House of Wax' (2005), to which Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) looks on in surprise, as Jared Padalecki starred in that movie alongside Paris Hilton.
  • In the 18th episode of the second season, titled 'Hollywood Babylon,' the horror movie director is named McG. This is a reference to the series' executive producer, who is the real McG.
  • In the sixth episode of the second season, the brothers and Joe review information about the serial killer Holmes, and among the photos of his victims is a photo of a real-life serial killer's victim — Jack the Ripper.
  • The name Crowley is taken from the occultist Aleister Crowley.
  • When the show's creators were deciding which car the Winchester brothers would travel in, the first choice was a 1967 Ford Mustang; however, it was later decided that a black Chevrolet Impala would look more menacing.
  • In episode 2 of season 9, after Kevin's failed attempt to hit Dean with a crossbow, Dean calls him Katniss, referring to the protagonist of The Hunger Games trilogy.
  • At the beginning of season 10, Sam Winchester wears a sling on his right arm. In the plot, this is explained by the fact that Castiel failed to protect him, and a demon broke Sam's arm. In real life, this was caused by an injury Jared Padalecki sustained in May 2014 at a convention in Rome.
  • In Season 1, Episode 8, there is a scene where the brothers break into a victim's house while it is pouring rain outside. However, when they get inside, not only are they dry, but their shoes leave no tracks on the white carpeting.
  • In Season 3, Episode 7, Gordon claims that Bela met the Winchester brothers in Massachusetts. However, in the previous episode, which takes place immediately before the events of this one, a local resident's car has Rhode Island license plates.
  • In the episode where Dean is conducting surveillance at Plucky's children's cafe (Season 7, Episode 14), a boy in glasses is cheating at an arcade machine. If you look closely, the score and the number of balls potted change in almost every frame.
  • At the very end of Season 10, Episode 16, Sam and Dean are driving down a road with Sam behind the wheel. But as the camera zooms out to show the car from behind, it is clearly visible that Dean is driving and Sam is sitting next to him. Furthermore, Sam's hairstyle does not match his look in Season 10, as his hair is still short.
  • In the episode 'Scarecrow,' when a young couple gets out of their car and walks into an apple orchard, the headlights are off and the highway is completely deserted. However, moments later, as they run among the trees, headlights can be seen in the background.
  • In the episode 'Asylum', Dean Winchester opens John's diary for the first time to a spread mentioning the deaths of teenagers and featuring a drawing of a wendigo. The second time the diary is opened, it is to a spread that only mentions the deaths of teenagers. The wendigo drawing turned out to be on the previous page.
  • In the episode 'Something Wicked This Way Comes', Sam claims that changelings feed on the mothers' synovial fluid until they 'kick the bucket.' However, the bite marks on the mothers were on their necks near the carotid artery. Synovial fluid, also known as joint fluid, is located in the synovium, or joint capsule; it serves to lubricate joints and nourish tissues. Therefore, the changelings would have had to bite the mothers' knees, elbows, or other large joints to feed. Furthermore, it would be extremely difficult to extract joint fluid using the mouth apparatus those children possessed.
  • The events of the episode 'Route 666' take place in the state of Missouri, but U.S. Route 6, which Sam and Dean were traveling on, does not pass through that state.
  • In the episode 'Scarecrow', the town where the action takes place is located in the state of Indiana. However, when Dean returns by car at night, a train passes by with a Canadian National Railway logo on one of the cars (the series is filmed in Vancouver, Canada).
  • The Winchesters' car has Kansas license plates on the front as well, although the state of Kansas does not issue front license plates.
  • Occasionally, while addressing each other, the actors used their real names instead of their characters' names. For example, in the episode "House of Pain," the bartender calls Dean "Jensen" while offering him a drink. In the episode "The Origin," Dean notices that the razor depicted in a painting is open, whereas it is closed in the photograph. While trying to draw Sam's attention to this, he addresses him as "Jared." These errors were corrected later when the series was released on DVD.
  • In the episode "Dead Man's Blood," John Winchester claims that Samuel Colt created his famous Colt in 1835 on the night of the massacre at the Alamo. However, the defenders of the Alamo died on March 6, 1836, a year after Colt invented the weapon.
