What's left behind the scenes

  • Sam Shepard, Ed Harris, and Harrison Ford were potential candidates for the role that eventually went to Edward James Olmos.
  • In the series, documents (photographs, books, etc.) have rounded corners. It is claimed that director Michael Rymer did this to demonstrate how hard he had to struggle financially to get a project with such a limited budget on screen. (The English phrase "cut corners" means to skip certain steps or stages to make something easier or cheaper, usually at the expense of the final result.) Producers later remarked that rounding the corners of everything in the series, with new episodes released every week, had become quite exhausting for everyone.
  • The names or call signs of some of the series' characters are named after key figures from ancient Greek mythology, such as Apollo and Cassiopeia.
  • At the beginning of the third season, Jamie Bamber lacked enough weight, so a body double was used in some scenes where his body was shown in close-up, and the actor himself used special inserts in his mouth to make his cheeks appear sagging.
  • Edward James Olmos insisted on a clause in his contract stating that no representatives of alien races would appear in the series. The actor wanted the plot to focus specifically on humans and the relationships between them.
  • Edward James Olmos was initially unwilling to even read the script for the pilot episode, but he did so after his family insisted, after which he agreed to participate in the project.
  • Initially, studio executives expressed certain doubts about Tricia Helfer's involvement in the project. At the time, Helfer had almost no acting experience and was primarily known as a fashion model. Her performance subsequently made such an impression that it was decided to build the entire promotional campaign for the series around her character.
  • The role of Ellen was initially offered to Lucy Lawless, but she declined, feeling that the part was not for her. Consequently, another role was written for her—D'Anna, whom she played in the 2004-2009 series.
  • Some of the mythological concepts used by Glen A. Larson for the series were drawn from Mormon theology. For example, the planet Kobol is an anagram of Kolob, mentioned in the Book of Mormon as the name of the nearest star where God resides. The episode "Lost Planet of the Gods" from the original 1978 series replicates a Mormon marriage ceremony, in which couples are "sealed" for "all eternity."
  • It was initially intended that the Seer—played by Amanda Plummer—would appear on screen from time to time, but this was prevented by issues with the actors' schedules and the filming timeline, so the actress appeared on screen only once.
  • Eleven episodes of the fourth season had already been filmed when the writers' strike occurred. Not knowing how long it would last or if the series would be canceled as a result, Ronald D. Moore and network management decided not to wait and aired the first ten episodes. When the strike finally ended, approval was granted to film the remaining nine episodes.
  • The twelve colony planets are named after the twelve astrological signs of the zodiac, for example, Caprica (from Capricorn), Scorpia (from Scorpio), and Aquaria (from Aquarius).
