What's left behind the scenes

  • Throughout the first season, the producers feared that references to the original series, its characters' names, and past events might alienate new viewers. Therefore, they kept such references to a minimum, allowing the audience to grow accustomed to the show's new mythology. Surprisingly, given the overall scale of the series and the speed at which events typically unfold, the first trip to another planet did not occur until the second season.
  • Filming each 45-minute episode took approximately three weeks. Hour-long episodes were filmed over the course of a month.
  • According to the Guinness World Records, Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction series.
  • Peter Capaldi insisted that his character should not have any romantic relationships with other characters.
  • Karen Gillan, who played Amy Pond—the companion of the 11th Doctor—appeared in the series as early as the fourth season in the episode "The Fires of Pompeii," where she played one of the priestesses.
  • On March 31, 2005, an announcement was made that Christopher Eccleston was leaving the series. The BBC later apologized for the report, which had been released without prior notification to Eccleston himself. In reality, it had already been agreed that Eccleston would appear in only one season of the show, and that the BBC would refrain from making any statements about his departure until the completion of that season. Regardless, the audience's reaction to Eccleston's departure was so intense that Outpost Gallifrey (the largest Doctor Who fan site on the internet) closed its forums to visitors for several days.
  • In the episode 'The Christmas Invasion,' there is a moment where Prime Minister Harriet Jones and her staff examine blood group information stored on a computer. On the computer monitor, the interface of the PowerDVD media player can be seen, which is clearly out of place and irrelevant to the current plot situation.
  • Writer and producer Russell T. Davies included actor Christopher Eccleston on the shortlist for the role of the Doctor, but in reality, he did not believe Eccleston would agree to the part, as he had a reputation as a serious actor who primarily appeared in dramas. However, it turned out that Eccleston was a great admirer of Davies as a writer. He contacted Davies himself to ask if he could audition for the role of the Doctor. It did emerge, however, that Eccleston was not a fan of the original series (1963-1989), so while preparing for the role, he only re-watched the first part of the episode "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" (1977).
  • Before Freema Agyeman appeared in the series as the Tenth Doctor's companion, she played one of the Torchwood employees in the episode "Army of Ghosts" during the second season.
  • Russell T. Davies did not consider any other actors for the role of the Tenth Doctor, as he had recently worked with David Tennant and believed he was perfectly suited for the part. Tennant was first offered the role of the Tenth Doctor during auditions for the episode "Rose" at Davies' home on March 23, 2005. Despite a popular fan theory, Tennant was never even considered for the role of the Ninth Doctor.
  • Matt Smith had to work 12 hours a day for 10 months.
  • Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi both suffered leg injuries during filming, which eventually required surgical intervention.
  • Freema Agyeman first appeared in Doctor Who in the episode 'Army of Ghosts' as Martha Jones' cousin, Adeola Oshodi. The actress greatly impressed the show's producer, Russell T Davies, and he offered her the role of the Doctor's permanent companion.
  • Hugh Grant was offered the role of the Doctor, but he turned it down, believing that the series would fail. The actor deeply regretted his decision in 2007, once it became clear that the show was not a failure. Grant did play the Doctor on television in John Henderson's sci-fi short film, 'Doctor Who and the Curse of Inevitable Death' (1999).
  • To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original "Doctor Who" series (1963-1989), the Royal Mail of the United Kingdom released a themed series of stamps in 2013.
  • The episodes "The Angels Take Manhattan," "The Snowmen," and "The Dalek Asylum" were nominated for the Hugo Award in the "Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form)" category.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch was offered the role of the Doctor after David Tennant's departure, but he declined, citing the responsibility that would come with the role.
  • Peter Capaldi, who played the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor, previously appeared in the film "World War Z" (2013) as a medical officer credited as "W.H.O. Doctor".
  • Georgia Moffett (daughter of the actor who played the Fifth Doctor and wife of the actor who played the Tenth Doctor), who played the Tenth Doctor's daughter in the series, auditioned for the role of Rose Tyler.
  • Eve Myles appeared in Doctor Who as Gwyneth and in Torchwood as Gwen. At the end of the 4th season, it was explained that Gwyneth is Gwen's ancestor.
  • In 2011, Moffat announced that he wanted to "give the Daleks a rest" because, in his opinion, "their frequent appearances had made them the easiest enemies to defeat." Previously, the Daleks were frightening, but over time they became sorts of symbols of Britain and were considered "funny." In "The Dalek Asylum," Moffat's goal was to make them scary again, and to do this, he decided to "present them as even more insane than usual." Karen Gillan admitted that before starting work on this episode, she wasn't afraid of the Daleks at all.
  • In English, Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who. At the start of filming in 2005, the BBC was concerned about confidentiality and gave the project the code name "Torchwood." This name was later used for the series' spin-off.
  • David Tennant, who had played the Tenth Doctor since 2005, announced his departure in October 2008. The actor to play the Eleventh Doctor was selected over several months. 27-year-old Matt Smith became the youngest actor to play the Doctor. Before him, the youngest was Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor at the age of 29.
  • Originally, Oswin was not intended to have any connection to Clara Oswald; she was simply meant to be a one-off character. However, during Jenna Coleman's audition for the companion role, Steven Moffat decided to make Oswin one of Clara's copies and cast the actress in both roles simultaneously.
