What's left behind the scenes

  • In the sixth episode of the second season, Castle puts on a space cowboy costume. This is the costume of Malcolm Reynolds from the series 'Firefly', played by Nathan Fillion. Upon seeing Rick in Malcolm Reynolds' costume, Alexis mentions that he wore it about five years ago. This is a reference to the movie 'Serenity' (2005), in which Nathan wore this costume for the last time, exactly five years before the release of 'Castle's' second season.
  • In the second episode of season 3, Richard Edgar Castle's middle name and surname are revealed. Before changing his last name to Castle, he was Richard Alexander Rogers. He took the middle name Edgar in honor of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe.
  • The sets for Richard Castle's apartment were used for the main character's apartment in the series 'Moonlighting'.
  • Stana Katic met Nathan Fillion right before the final screen tests. She had just gotten out of the makeup chair and suddenly realized that her top was too long. She found a pair of scissors and asked Fillion to shorten her blouse (while he thought she wanted to rehearse her lines with him). This episode caught the producers' attention, and Katic got the role.
  • In season 2, episode 18, Castle shoots a criminal, hitting him in the arm. Later, Beckett thanks him and says it was a good shot. Castle responds with a line from Jayne in the series 'Firefly' (2002-2003), mirroring the situation: 'I was aiming for the head.'
  • According to screenwriter Andrew W. Marlowe, Nathan Fillion, who played Castle, auditioned with 125 actresses before they found the one who was a perfect fit for his on-screen partner. That person turned out to be Stana Katic.
  • In episode 6 of season 5, Castle says: 'I'm a fan of good sci-fi: Star Trek, Galactica, that Joss Whedon series.' He is referring to the series 'Firefly' (2002-2003), in which Nathan Fillion played the lead role.
  • On screen, the relationship between Nathan Fillion's and Stana Katic's characters was flawless, but off-camera, it was quite strained. It got to the point where, toward the end of the series, they had to see a family counselor. By the final season, the professional relationship between the actors had deteriorated so much that they stopped speaking to each other entirely between takes, preferring to stay in their own dressing rooms.
  • In the ninth episode of the fourth season, at the 9-minute mark, when Detective Esposito answers a phone call, it is clearly visible that his phone is locked.
