What's left behind the scenes

  • Explaining his decision to make Dr. Watson a woman, the show's creator Rob Doherty said it was a way to show '...how a man and a woman can live and work together without introducing romantic relationships into the mix.'
  • Detective Bell, a police officer with highly developed deductive skills, appears periodically in the series. This is a tribute to Joseph Bell (1837-1911), a professor at the University of Edinburgh. He knew Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) and served as the prototype for Sherlock Holmes.
  • In many series, characters' tattoos play an important role in plot development, but in 'Elementary,' the makeup artist does not apply the main character's tattoos. These are the actual tattoos of actor Jonny Lee Miller. Unlike his character, Miller entrusted them to a tattoo artist.
  • Before starting work on the series, Rob Doherty studied a psychological profile of Sherlock Holmes compiled by specialists.
  • The series shows that Sherlock Holmes is interested in beekeeping. In Arthur Conan Doyle's story 'His Last Bow' (1917), it is stated that the famous detective retired, settled in the county of Sussex, and took up beekeeping.
  • Several Sherlock Holmes stories mention the Diogenes Club, one of whose founders was Sherlock Holmes' brother, Mycroft.
  • At the time they were cast as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in the pilot episode, neither Jonny Lee Miller nor Lucy Liu had read a single work by Arthur Conan Doyle about Sherlock Holmes.
  • Inspector Gregson appears in the detective novella 'A Study in Scarlet' (1887) and in stories by Arthur Conan Doyle.
  • Mrs. Hudson, played by Candice Cane, appears in two episodes. This is a reference to the character from Arthur Conan Doyle's works, the landlady of the apartment at 221B Baker Street where Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson resided. Mrs. Hudson appears in almost every adaptation of the great detective's adventures.
  • The rooftop scenes (for example, where Sherlock Holmes tends to his bees) were filmed on the roof of Silvercup Studios in Long Island.
  • Filming for the series frequently took place on 7th Avenue and 51st and 52nd Streets in New York.
  • Joan's mother is named Mary Watson. This is a reference to Arthur Conan Doyle's works, in which Doctor Watson's wife is named Mary.
  • Vinnie Jones, who played the football fan Sebastian Moran in the 12th episode of Season 1, was a professional footballer before his acting career. From 1991 to 1992, Jones played for Chelsea, the favorite football club of Jonny Lee Miller, the actor who played Sherlock Holmes.
