What's left behind the scenes

  • According to the costume designer, nearly 100 costumes were sewn for the main characters and about 200 for the extras. Each one, whether for men or women, required about 10 meters of fabric.
  • The costume department consisted of about 30 people, including the costume designer, her team of fashion designers, seamstresses, and fitters.
  • The intricate parquet floors of the Palace of Versailles are shown in the first and second seasons of the series, which take place between 1667 and the 1670s. However, parquet did not appear at Versailles until 1684. It replaced the natural stone flooring, which sat atop a wooden base that rotted quickly because the stone floor was constantly washed.
  • 'Versailles' is a French-Canadian historical series in which the characters speak English. This was done to increase the audience size, but it drew the ire of French film critics, who considered the use of the English language inappropriate.
  • King Louis XIV of France (1638–1715), his brother Philippe d'Orléans (1640–1701), and nearly all the French nobility in the series are played by English-speaking actors. The only Englishwoman at court, Princess Henrietta, was played by a French-speaking actress from Switzerland. Given that Henrietta was actually raised at the French court from the age of three, she spoke French more than English.
