What's left behind the scenes

The series creators received permission to continue working on the project during the joint strike by the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild.
The project began with a video that Dallas Jenkins (who later became the series' director, writer, producer, and showrunner) filmed in his home state of Illinois. He used the footage wisely, raising $10 million and launching production of the series after turning to Kickstarter (a crowdfunding site for creative, scientific, and industrial projects).
Biblical scholars assist the series writers with the script, verifying the text for biblical accuracy.
The series does not employ conventional methods and does not set fixed release dates for episodes. Once an episode is edited and ready for broadcast, it is released on YouTube and through corresponding apps.
Jonathan Roumie (who plays Jesus) decided it would be unrealistic for his character to speak with an American or British accent. Instead, his speech incorporates nuances from his Egyptian father and Palestinian aunt.
