What's left behind the scenes

Uliana Khomyuk (Emily Watson) is the only fictional character whose image is an embodiment of several scientists who took part in the liquidation of the accident's consequences.
On screen, the actors speak English; however, all speech heard over the radio, in recorded phone calls, on Soviet television news, and in announcements made via alert systems is in Russian.
Most of the location filming of the power units took place at the decommissioned Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (Lithuania), which has reactors of the same type as the Chernobyl NPP. However, the Ignalina plant's control panel differed significantly from that of Chernobyl, so a mockup had to be created.
Pripyat was filmed in the Fabijoniškės district of Vilnius, the 6th Moscow Hospital in the city of Kaunas, and most of the outdoor scenes in Kyiv.
Craig Mazin wanted to film several scenes in Pripyat itself, but the city no longer looks the way it did in 1986.
The bulk of the series' soundtrack consists of sounds recorded at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. To capture them, composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, sound recordist Chris Watson, and music producer Sam Slater visited the station before filming began. Upon returning to the studio, they spent hours listening to the recordings and selecting sounds to create the melodies.
Filming began in April 2018 and lasted for 16 weeks.
The pieces of radioactive graphite seen in the series are actual graphite from the Ignalina NPP that had never been put into operation.
Creating the makeup for the firefighters who received lethal doses of radiation proved to be one of the most challenging processes, as makeup artist Daniel Parker could not find any photographic or video evidence of the firefighters' final days. He developed the looks based on Svetlana Alexievich's book 'Chernobyl Prayer' and eyewitness accounts, specifically those of Lyudmila, the widow of Vasily Ignatenko.
At the beginning of the second episode, a penn reading '970 Years of Brest' hangs on the wall in Uliana Khomyuk's office, although Brest was 967 years old in 1986.
