Short description

Britain is in the grip of a chilling recession... falling wages, rising prices, civil unrest - only the bankers are smiling. It's 1783 and Ross Poldark returns from the American War of Independence to his beloved Cornwall to find his world in ruins: his father dead, the family mine long since closed, his house wrecked and his sweetheart pledged to marry his cousin. But Ross finds that hope and love can be found when you are least expecting it in the wild but beautiful Cornish landscape.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming began in April 2014 in Cornwall and Bristol.
  • In 'Poldark in Cornwall,' Graham reveals that he invented the name Poldark. He originally named the character after his friend, a chemist named Polgrin. However, Polgrin did not sound strong or mysterious enough for the character, so Graham changed it to Poldark.
  • In his autobiography, Memoirs of a Private Man, Graham mentioned that the character of Demelza was based, at least in part, on his own wife, Jean Mary Williamson (1913–1992), who was originally from Cornwall.
  • In his autobiography, W. Graham claims that the character of Ross is partly based on a fighter pilot he met on a train during World War II.
  • The series is based on a collection of historical novels by Winston Graham titled the 'Poldark Saga' (1945-2002).
  • Filming locations include the coast of St Agnes in North Cornwall, depicting Nampara Valley, and Botallack Mine near St Just in Penzance, which was used as Wheel Leisure, the mine Ross Poldark attempts to restore. Church Cove beach in Gurnard's Head on the Lizard Peninsula was used for the shipwreck scenes. Town scenes were filmed in Corsham, Wiltshire. Underground scenes were filmed at the Poldark Mine (renamed after Winston Graham's novels) in Cornwall. Some interior scenes were filmed at Prior Park College in Bath, Somerset.
