What's left behind the scenes

  • In 2016, the series was honored with a BAFTA Scotland award in the category of "Best Dramatic Series."
  • The Shetland Islands are an archipelago in northeast Scotland, which occupies the northern part of the UK. The weather there is poor almost year-round, but in some scenes of the series where rain is shown, watering systems were used for filming.
  • None of the episodes in the third season are adaptations of works by British writer Ann Cleaves.
  • In 2016, Douglas Henshall won the BAFTA Scotland award for Best Actor for his role in the series.
  • Most of the series takes place on the Shetland Islands, although it was primarily filmed in mainland Scotland.
  • Actor Steven Robinson (who played a patrol constable and later a detective constable) mentioned that while filming in his native Shetland Islands, he really enjoyed the opportunity to speak in the local dialect. However, when he spoke in this dialect and used local colloquialisms in the southern parts of the country, no one could understand him.
  • The first seasons of the series are based on the works of crime novelist Ann Cleaves.
