Short description
A "contemporary prequel" to the 1960 film Psycho, depicting the life of Norman Bates and his mother Norma prior to the events portrayed in Hitchcock's film, albeit in a different fictional town and in a modern setting. The series begins after the death of Norma's husband, when she purchases a motel located in a coastal Oregon town so she and Norman can start a new life.

What's left behind the scenes
- The series was filmed in Aldergrove, as well as in the Fraser Valley in British Columbia (Canada).
- Executive producer Carlton Cuse, who also worked on ABC's "Lost," announced on his Twitter page that episodes of "Bates Motel" contain so-called "easter eggs": In the second episode, a stuffed polar bear can be seen in Emma's father's shop—the "Dharma Initiative" scientists conducted experiments on them, and the main characters encountered the animal several times during the first episode. In the third episode, Norman is taken to St. Sebastian's Hospital. Jack and Christian Shephard were surgeons at this hospital, and several characters were treated there. In the fifth episode, Norman and Emma find Keith Summers' boat at "Site 815." This is a reference to the famous Oceanic Flight 815. In the eighth episode, Remo drinks "Dharma Beer" at a bar. Throughout the series "Lost," characters drink this beer.
- Norma's car is a 1972 Mercedes Benz 280 SEL 4.5.
- In episode 7 of season 1, while Norma Bates is in the motel office talking to the mysterious guest from room 9, she closes her laptop at one point. In the next shot, the laptop is already open: the corner of the monitor is visible in the frame, and the screen is lighting up Norma's face. When the guest leaves, the laptop is closed, and Norma opens it once again.
- The series writer, Bill Balas, actually has cystic fibrosis, and the character of Emma Decody, who suffers from the same disease, was written based on him.
