What's left behind the scenes

After the completion of the first season, production of the series was suspended due to an unexpected cancer diagnosis for Andy Whitfield, who played the role of Spartacus. The producers intended to wait for the actor's recovery before starting filming for the second season, but as the disease progressed and Whitfield ultimately left the series, the role was recast, and Liam McIntyre was chosen for the lead. Andy Whitfield passed away in September 2011.
Andy Whitfield, the actor who played Spartacus, passed away in 2011 at the age of 39, roughly the same age as his character. Some historians argue that Spartacus was between 37 and 40 years old at the time of his death in 71 BC. Most hold the opinion that he was 38.
To film the orgies, the producers hired a specialized company from New Zealand and told its representatives to do whatever came to mind on camera.
Throughout the first season, Spartacus endures ridicule and abuse because of his Thracian origin. Nevertheless, some historians believe that Thrace was one of the provinces that Rome found particularly difficult to conquer precisely because of the ferocity of the Thracian warriors.
The wooden training swords used by the gladiators seem light and appear easy to handle. In reality, such swords were heavier than iron ones. This was done intentionally to make it easier to parry blows from a gladius (a Roman short sword).
A feature-length film was planned between the 2nd and 3rd seasons, but the screenwriters realized that too much would have to be cut to avoid an NC-17 rating (no one 17 or under admitted) from the Motion Picture Association in the US, so the idea was abandoned.
Andy Whitfield was never shown fully nude from the front. For the erotic scene with actress Viva Bianca, he wore a prosthetic penis. This scene took 12 hours to film.
Throughout the first two seasons, viewers see Glabrus attempting to make a name for himself, first in the Senate and then in the army, wanting to leave a mark on history. In reality, the only reliable fact known about Gaius Claudius Glabrus is that he was the first of the generals who failed to stop Spartacus.
The brutal massacre scene is historically accurate. The character Tiberius is the only instance where the screenwriters allowed themselves some creative liberties. Everything else is authentic.
