What's left behind the scenes

  • Actress Jennifer Jason Leigh was intended to appear in the second season, but she declined to participate, leading the creators to hire Cynthia Watros.
  • John Locke was named after the English philosopher (also John Locke), who hypothesized that before the emergence of modern society, primitive humans lived peacefully, were happy, and were equal to one another. Danielle Rousseau was named after Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the French philosopher who argued that society is responsible for all of human misery. He believed that if a person is simply removed from this society, they will immediately become extraordinarily noble and kind.
  • The plane crash scenes were filmed on Mokuleia Beach, located near the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Some of the scenes from the movie 'Jurassic Park' were also filmed in this area.
  • It was originally planned that the character of Austin would be played by actress Kim Yun-jin; however, the producers eventually decided she was not right for the role and created a different character for her—the Korean woman, Sun Kwun.
  • Jorge Garcia was the first actor to pass the casting. Due to filming for the series, the actor had to miss his sister's wedding.
  • During the filming of the first season finale, each actor was given an abbreviated version of the script containing only the scenes in which they were scheduled to appear.
  • In the 14th episode of the 4th season, after the helicopter falls into the water, Desmond is seen barefoot; however, in subsequent scenes on the inflatable raft and when meeting Penelope aboard her ship, Desmond is wearing sneakers again.
  • Matthew Fox (Jack) originally auditioned for the role of Sawyer.
  • In the 24th episode of the 1st season, during the scenes filmed on the raft, a boat unrelated to the events of the series is visible in the distance in several shots.
  • Dominic Monaghan auditioned for the role of Sawyer.
  • Jack Shephard was named after a prisoner who escaped from Newgate several times in the 18th century.
  • The producers wanted Forest Whitaker for the role of Sawyer, but he was filming his movie 'First Daughter' (2004), so Josh Holloway was brought into the project.
  • During the scenes in which Charlie uses heroin, actor Dominic Monaghan was actually inhaling brown sugar.
  • The rocks used during the filming of the waterfall are actually rubber props. For this reason, the sound accompanying these scenes had to be recorded separately in a studio. According to the creators' original vision, Charlie was supposed to be an older man; however, upon seeing Dominic Monaghan at the audition, the crew fell so in love with the actor that they decided to rewrite the script to account for Dominic's natural strength and power.
  • The first season of the series is dedicated to the first 40 days the 'castaways' spent on the island.
  • The 108-minute timer in the bunker is also a hint at Hugo's cursed numbers: 4+8+15+16+23+42 = 108.
  • During the filming of the pilot episode, the cast was not allowed to be present during the set decoration. They could only open their eyes during filming when the operator turned on the camera. The creators of the pilot episode did this to achieve the greatest possible authenticity.
  • In Russia, the premiere of the second season of the series was accompanied by exclusive promotional clips in which the actors spoke a phrase in Russian. In addition to the character, the Channel One logo was always present in the frame.
  • In episode 20 of season 2, on the roofs of the police cars in Anna Lucia's flashbacks, the numbers 04, 08, 15, 16, 23, and 42 are clearly visible from left to right and top to bottom. This is a reference to Hugo's numbers.
  • By the end of the series, it remained unclear who fired the shots at Juliet and Sawyer; however, the show's producer, Damon Lindelof, revealed that they had a filmed scene revealing the culprit's identity, but the decision was made to leave it as a mystery.
  • Actor Jon Hamm auditioned for the role of Jack Shephard, but the show's creators cast Matthew Fox instead.
  • To keep the plot a secret until the premiere, producers employ various tricks. For example, they do not let the actors read the entire script, but only the parts involving their specific characters. This is exactly how the producers of this series operated. The actors themselves have no idea how it will all end or where the screenwriters' thoughts will lead them.
  • Initially, the role of Jack was offered to Michael Keaton, with the intention that he would die in the pilot episode. However, Keaton turned down the role, and Matthew Fox played Jack instead.
  • In the 9th episode of the 1st season, during a flashback scene where Sayid leaves the barracks and speaks with the commander, World War II-era self-propelled guns—the Ferdinand StuG—are visible in the background, which could not possibly have been there.
  • The budget for the two-hour pilot episode was approximately 12 million dollars. At the time, no other television series could boast such a scale. As experience showed, this decision was worth the investment, as the film became the most popular in the history of the ABC network.
  • Besides well-known names like John Locke and Rousseau, the island is home to Daniel Faraday, named after the English physicist Michael Faraday, and Mikhail Bakunin, a significant figure in Russian history and the ideologue of the anarchic wing of 19th-century Narodnichestvo.
  • The symbol on Boone's t-shirt is the Chinese equivalent of the number 84. By reversing the digits, we get the exact number of survivors from the first plane crash.
  • Before filming for the sixth season began, the entire cast and crew were blessed by a priest from Hawaii.
  • Research showed that the pilot episode was watched by about 18.7 million viewers. The second episode attracted the attention of 16.33 million.
  • The dog (male) named Vincent was played by a dog (female) named Madison.
  • ABC network executives valued a 30-second commercial during the finale of 'Lost' at 900 thousand dollars.
  • In January 2008, before the premiere of the fourth season, advertising stands for Oceanic Airlines—a company that does not exist in real life—appeared in nine cities around the world.
  • Since the show's creators changed their minds about killing off Jack at the very beginning, they had to alter the backstory of another character, Kate. According to the original plan, she was meant to be a businesswoman who became a widow during the crash and led the group of survivors after Jack's death. But because Jack remained alive, Kate's story was rewritten.
