What's left behind the scenes

Once, a fugitive criminal wandered onto the set and surrendered to the actors dressed in police officer uniforms. This incident was later parodied in one of the episodes.
In 1988, David Simon, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, joined the Baltimore Police Department's homicide unit as a volunteer assistant to cover the unit's work for a year. The material he gathered (notes, interviews, observations, etc.) was later developed into the book 'Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets,' which served as the literary inspiration for the series. A significant part of the first and second seasons of the show is based on real events from Simon's book.
A bulletin board displaying the performance results of each detective (including information on solved and unsolved cases) actually existed at the Baltimore Police Department. It was removed when it was felt that it had a negative impact on morale within the police force, but it was later reinstated.
