What's left behind the scenes

  • In the fourth season, it is mentioned that Officer Whitely moved to London. This is because Eddie Falco left the series to first appear in the play 'Side Man' and later as Carmela Soprano in 'The Sopranos' (1999).
  • Tom Fontana wrote two endings for the fourth season because it wasn't certain whether the studio would renew the series for a fifth season. In the alternative ending (had the series been canceled), Beecher was released from prison. Since the series was renewed for a fifth season and Tom really liked the release scene, he used it as one of Beecher's dreams.
  • The final episode is titled "Exeunt Omnes," which literally translates from Latin as "everyone leaves." It is a theatrical term meaning that all characters exit the stage.
  • In the first season, Jefferson Keane was executed because Leon decided to leave the series.
  • Before the start of the third season, Tom Fontana asked the actors if they had any boxing experience. Everyone answered in the affirmative, but it later turned out that only Chuck Zito actually knew how to box.
  • In the opening credits, the viewer sees a tattooed male hand. This is the hand of the series creator, Tom Fontana.
  • Chuck Zito and Mums Da Shamer were the only actors playing inmates who had actually served time in prison.
  • Four actors from the series 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' appeared in 'Oz': Christopher Meloni, Dean Winters, B. D. Wong, and J. K. Simmons.
  • Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje left the series to film 'The Mummy Returns' (2001).
  • Brothers Ryan and Cyril O'Reilly were played by brothers Dean Winters and Scott William Winters. A third brother, Brad Winters, is one of the series' writers.
  • Many of the actors playing inmates noticed that if they were late to filming, their character would either die or be raped in the next episode.
  • The prison sets were built in an old warehouse, which Tom Fontana renovated at his own expense.
  • Originally, the action was meant to take place in a medium-security prison.
  • In the first season, the full name of 'Oz' is 'Oswald State Correctional Facility.' However, the name was later changed to 'Oswald State Correctional Facility, Level 4'.
  • Terry Kinney (Tim McManus) and Catherine Erbe (Shirley Bellinger) were married.
  • At the end of the fourth season, Christopher Meloni left the series because he could not physically manage working on both 'Oz' and 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' (1999) simultaneously. The show stated that Keller had been transferred to another prison. However, Christopher later decided to return to the series, believing that the significant physical and emotional strain was worth the experience of filming two shows at once.
  • The series was originally going to be called "Club Med."
  • Most of the actors who played inmates have played police officers in other series.
  • Initially, Chuck Zito auditioned for the role of one of the bikers. However, due to his build and New York accent, Tom Fontana felt he would be a perfect fit for the role of the Italian.
  • The first hour-long drama on HBO.
  • Mums Da Shamer, who played the Poet, wrote all the poems that the Poet recites in the series himself.
  • Kirk Acevedo is practically absent from the first half of the fourth season, as he was filming 'Band of Brothers' (2001). In the series, his absence was explained by Miguel Alvarez's escape. Kirk returned in the second half of the fourth season. However, he soon landed a role in 'Third Watch' (1999) and left 'Oz' again. This time, Alvarez was placed in solitary confinement.
  • Before converting to Islam, Karima Said was named Goodson Truman, and Zahira Arif was Jerome Van Dyke.
