Short description

What's left behind the scenes
- Up until the fourth episode of Season 12, the police station scenes were filmed in North Bergen, New Jersey. After that, production moved to a studio near the piers in Manhattan, where the original Law & Order series had previously been filmed.
- Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, NBC ordered that the opening credits sequence for the 2001-2002 season be modified to remove footage of the Twin Towers.
- Initially, Ice-T (a former rapper, born Tracy Marrow) signed a contract to appear in only four episodes, but he enjoyed the series so much that he asked to be made a permanent cast member.
- Mariska Hargitay is a certified consultant specializing in working with victims of sexual assault.
- Before appearing on screen as Detective Amanda Rollins, actress Kelli Giddish played a rape victim in one of the episodes.
- Many members of the main cast across the Law & Order universe initially appeared in the series as guest stars. Peter Scanavino, who plays Sonny Carisi, is the only actor from the original series to have appeared as a guest actor in four of the six series before joining the main cast.
- The series was originally intended to be titled "Sexual Assault Crimes" and to be independent of the series "Law & Order" (1990-2010). However, NBC decided that the title would be too harsh. After negotiations with "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf, it was decided to make this series a part of that franchise.
