Short description

The exploits of FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who investigate X-Files: marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder believes in the existence of aliens and the paranormal while Scully, a skeptic, is assigned to make scientific analyses of Mulder's discoveries that debunk Mulder's work and thus return him to mainstream cases.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Mulder's phone number in the series is 555-0199. This number also belongs to the Berman family in the movie "American Beauty" (1999). Furthermore, Al Pacino leaves this same number on Russell Crowe's answering machine in the movie "The Insider" (1999).
  • Nicholas Lea, who played Alex Krycek starting from the second season, can also be seen in episode 1x13 "Gender Bender," where he appears as one of the victims; Scully and Mulder interrogate him in the hospital around the 35-minute mark.
  • In the first episode (Pilot), the man sitting behind Scully on the plane is David Duchovny's father.
  • The second episode of the ninth season (Nothing Important Happened Today II) is dedicated to Chad Keller, as stated before the final credits of the episode. Chad Keller was a scientist working in the aerospace industry and was a close friend of Chris Carter and his wife. He perished during the terrorist attacks in New York in September 2001.
  • The vessel 'Piper Maru', with its classified route, also appears in the movie 'Alien vs. Predator' (2004).
  • In January 2018, immediately after the TV premiere of the series' 11th season, Gillian Anderson announced that she was leaving the role of Agent Scully. Initially, the actress had planned to leave 'The X-Files' back in 2016 after the 10th season, but later decided to return to the project, as she felt that six episodes were not enough for a proper farewell.
  • Producer and screenwriter Chris Carter wanted to end the series after the 5th season, upon the expiration of his original contract as well as the contracts of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, who played FBI Agents Scully and Mulder, respectively. Carter planned to continue the project in the form of feature films, the first of which would be Rob Bowman's sci-fi thriller 'The X-Files: Fight the Future' (1998). In response to public demand, the FOX Network ordered that the series not be canceled and that Bowman's film be placed between the 5th and 6th seasons. It was difficult for Carter to work on the 5th and 6th seasons and the movie simultaneously, as he had to write a screenplay that would not require the viewer to have watched the series to understand what was happening, while ensuring the film's plotlines aligned with the twists and turns of the series.
  • Due to the height difference between David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, the actress sometimes had to stand on a box. Occasionally, Anderson would forget she was standing on the box and fall off.
  • While auditioning for the role of Scully, Gillian Anderson lied about her age and added four years to it.
  • The opening credits show Mulder and Scully's badges with the inscription 'Federal Bureau of Justice, US Department of Investigations.' In reality, FBI badges read 'Federal Bureau of Investigation, US Department of Justice,' but displaying a fake FBI badge, even in a series, violates current legislation, hence the changes in the text.
  • It was intended that Lucy Lawless's character would appear periodically in the final season of the series; however, due to a difficult pregnancy, she appeared in only two episodes.
  • In episode 1x12 'Beyond the Sea' at the 8:10 mark, a cap can be seen on a hanger; this is the same cap Fox Mulder took after Max Fenig was abducted in episode 1x9 'Fallen Angel' at the 38-minute mark.
  • Scully's abduction by aliens in the second season was not originally planned in the script; it was a necessary move because Gillian Anderson became pregnant in the middle of filming the first season. She returned to filming just 10 days after giving birth, and in playing an exhausted Scully, she didn't even have to pretend. The director also had to fight for Anderson's place in the series, as Fox studio executives wanted to fire Gillian for breach of contract.
  • Mulder's abduction by aliens at the end of the seventh season was not planned. In 1999, before the seventh season premiered on TV, David Duchovny filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox. The actor claimed that according to his contract, the studio was supposed to pay him 5% of the series' profits, but he was receiving far less, despite the box office success of the feature film 'The X-Files: Fight the Future' (1998). The lawsuit was successful and Duchovny received about $20 million, but his relationship with Chris Carter was damaged. Ultimately, in May 2000, Mulder left the series as a main character. In the eighth season, Duchovny's character appeared fully only in the last seven episodes, and in the final season, only in the last two episodes. To some extent, everything that happened can also be explained by the fact that David Duchovny was busy writing and directing several episodes of the seventh and ninth seasons.
  • Episode 10 of Season 6 tells the story of Alfred Fellig, who photographed crime scenes before the police arrived. This is a reference to the real photographer Arthur Fellig, known as Weejie, who also often arrived at crime scenes before the police.
  • When casting the actor for the character credited as the 'Cigarette Smoking Man,' the producers initially had no idea that he was destined to play one of the lead roles in the project. As the character began to receive more and more screen time, they worried that the role would be too much for William B. Davis, who had originally been hired simply as an extra. However, Davis, one of Canada's most respected and well-known acting teachers, made such an impression on the series creator Chris Carter that Carter turned the character into the primary antagonist of the entire project.
  • In episode 1x13, 'Gender Bender,' at the 5-minute mark, while Mulder is examining the corpse, the 'corpse' can be seen blinking.
  • In the second episode of the second season, the first victim has a tattoo on their arm: the name "DMITRY" written in Cyrillic. However, instead of the Russian letter M, there is an English W. Later, in a photograph that Scully shows Mulder, the error is corrected. Additionally, the inscription on the arm differs from the one in the photo in that all the letters on the arm are filled in, whereas in the photo, the first letter И is only partially filled.
