What's left behind the scenes
- The midwives live in Nonnatus House, named after Saint Raymond Nonnatus (1204–1240; "nonnatus" in Latin means "not born"), who was born via Cesarean section and is the patron saint of expectant mothers and childbirth.
- The creators of the series were advised by Jennifer Worth, the author of the novel being adapted; however, two months before filming began, she was diagnosed with esophageal cancer that had spread to the bones, and she passed away on May 31, 2011. Jennifer herself selected the actress for the role of Chummy. The writer explained to the producer that she had seen Miranda Hart in a sitcom and believed she would do well, and producer Pippa Harris decided to send the script to Miranda.
- “Nonnatus” is a pseudonym for the “Community of St John the Divine,” an Anglican religious order of nuns founded in London in 1848. In 1976, the order moved to Birmingham, and it ceased practicing midwifery in 1990.
- A great deal of material was gathered with the help of the series' fans. After the first season, many nurses and midwives—particularly retired midwives—offered their memories as sources.
- Four dolls were used in the film to play the babies, but for the most part, real infants approximately one week old were used.
