Mildred Pierce depicts an overprotective, self-sacrificing mother during the Great Depression who finds herself separated from her husband, opening a restaurant of her own and falling in love with a man, all the while trying to earn her spoiled, narcissistic daughter's love and respect.

What's left behind the scenes

The mini-series is set in Los Angeles, but it was filmed in New York. The spring was unusually cold, and to prevent the palm trees from withering in the chill, they had to be warmed in greenhouses.
The project's director and screenwriter, Todd Haynes, decided that since every scene of the series is written from the perspective of the main character, the lead actress, Kate Winslet, must necessarily appear in every scene of all five hour-long episodes. The actress later candidly admitted that these shoots (which lasted about eighteen weeks) were the most difficult of her career since Titanic (James Cameron, 1997).
