Short description

At the age of 26, when his reign began, Sultan Süleyman sought to build an empire more powerful than Alexander the Great and to render the Ottomans invincible. Throughout his 46-year reign, his fame as the greatest warrior and ruler of his age spreads both to the East and West. With his companion Pargalı İbrahim, Süleyman achieves great victories, and makes his name known in the Muslim World. Süleyman called İbrahim his brother, friend and advisor. The television series shows Süleyman's consolidation of his power: Pargalı İbrahim being grand minister of state, reinforcing the rule of law throughout the empire, meeting foreign diplomats, and preparing for military campaigns, all set against the backdrop of the tension between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Mehmet Günsür, who played the role of 18-year-old Mustafa, was 37 years old during filming. He was five years younger than his on-screen father, Halit Ergenç.
  • The Supreme Council of Radio and Television of Turkey stated that they had received over 70,000 complaints regarding the distortion of historical facts in the series.
  • In the series, Sultan Suleiman and other characters constantly compete in the game of 'Matrak.' In Turkey, Matrak is considered a martial art and a method of self-defense involving sword fighting. Ottoman Empire soldiers were once trained in this game, and since then, Matrak has become very popular. To participate in a Matrak bout, participants wear a protective helmet and carry either a wooden sword or a stick with a soft round tip, as well as a soft circular cushion used as a shield.
  • Princess Isabella Fortuna, who appears in the series as the Princess of Castile and León, is a fictional character. The ruler of Castile and León with a similar name around that time was Queen Isabella I of Castile, but she was never a concubine of the sultan. Furthermore, the final year of her life was 1504, whereas Suleiman I did not ascend to the throne until 1520.
  • The role of Hürrem was initially offered to Öykü Celik, but the actress was not suitable as she weighed 6 kg more than required.
