Short description

The adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok, the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the sagas of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. What's left behind the scenes

  • The budget for the first season was 40 million dollars.
  • The name of the historical Viking Hrólfr was changed to Rollo (to make it more familiar to Western audiences). He once conquered parts of France known today as Normandy ("Land of the Northmen"). Hrólfr is the great-great-great-great-grandfather of William the Conqueror.
  • Rollo's tattoos depict a scene from Norse mythology: Fenrir's sons, the wolves Hati and Sköll, pursuing Mani (the moon) and Sol (the sun) to devour them.
  • Clive Standen and Gustaf Skarsgård auditioned for the role of Ragnar, while Travis Fimmel auditioned for the role of Rollo.
  • Gustaf Skarsgård helped other actors master the pronunciation of certain Old Norse words. As he later recounted, the name Knud proved to be the most difficult for the English-speaking actors.
  • Ragnar means "defender of the fortress."
  • No evidence has survived regarding Viking hairstyles. In modern art, men are depicted with beards and women with their hair gathered in a ponytail. In the TV series, the Vikings were given short hairstyles so that they wouldn't stick out from under their helmets in battle, where an enemy could grab them by the hair from behind.
  • Lodbrok is not a surname, but a nickname meaning "shaggy breeches." Vikings often gave each other nicknames reflecting their habits or characteristic traits.
  • The women whose names appear in the opening credits are the nine daughters of Rán, the storm deity of the sea. The names of the Vikings in the credits can be distinguished by the images of their belongings (wealth and weapons) next to them. During a clap of thunder, Hel is shown on screen—the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, and ruler of the realm of the dead.
  • Ravens are frequently shown in the series. In ancient times, Scandinavian tribes revered these birds as companions of Odin. It was believed that two ravens served Odin—Huginn (or Thought) and Muninn (Memory), who flew across the world and reported back to him on what they had seen. Odin had many names and epithets, and 'the God of Ravens' was one of them. Ravens were depicted on Viking banners. Ragnar's troops marched under such banners. Thus, the characters in the series viewed the appearance of ravens as evidence that Odin was watching over them.
  • According to the sagas from which some of the series' plotlines are drawn, Ivar the Boneless was the eldest son of King Ragnar by Aslaug.
  • Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar, is only 13 years older than Alexander Ludwig, who plays his son Bjorn Ironside. Katheryn Winnick, who plays Lagertha, is 15 years older than Ludwig.
  • The basis for the series' plot is Icelandic mythology, primarily the sagas and legends of Ragnar Lothbrok. Some researchers claim that the actual main character of these works is Aslaug, one of Ragnar's wives. Another wife named Lagertha is not mentioned in all the sagas. Lagertha appears in the chronicle 'Gesta Danorum' by Saxo Grammaticus (upon which William Shakespeare's tragedy 'Hamlet' is based). Most historians believe that Ragnar (father of Bjorn Ironside and Ivar the Boneless, the conqueror of Paris) may have actually existed, whereas Lagertha is a fictional character.
  • In the early versions of the plot, Rollo was Ragnar's cousin.
  • Harbard means 'grey-beard.' This is one of the many names and nicknames of Odin.
  • Horik I, the ruler of Denmark, exiled his nephew Gutterm, who subsequently gained fame among the Vikings. In 854, Gutterm killed Horik I.
  • The runic inscription 'Shard of Kings' on Horik's sword is written in a mixture of the oldest form of the runic alphabet, consisting of 24 runes, and a later version consisting of 16 characters.
  • The first season of the series consists of 9 episodes. The number 9 plays a significant role in Norse mythology: Odin was nailed to Yggdrasil, or the World Tree, for 9 days while attempting to obtain the runes; the World Tree itself encompassed 9 worlds; Heimdall, the guardian of the World Tree, was born of 9 mothers; Odin possesses a ring that produces 9 new rings every evening; Rán, the storm deity of the sea, had 9 daughters known as the wave maidens; there were 9 lindworms, or giant dragon-like creatures; every 9 years, 9 males of each species were sacrificed to the gods; Freyr had to wait 9 days to marry Gerd; the 'valknut' symbol had 9 corners; Thor killed the world serpent Jörmungandr and took 9 steps before dying himself; Odin killed King Geirröð on the 9th day after his capture; Odin knew 18 (two times 9) runes.
  • Borg was a Swedish jarl, and King Horik was supposed to send Ragnar to Sweden to resolve a conflict. When Gustaf Skarsgård read the script, he wrote a letter to Michael Hirst stating that: 1) Sweden did not exist at that time; 2) had Sweden existed then, the city of Uppsala would have been part of it. Hirst changed Sweden to Götaland (the Land of the Geats). Sweden was formed through the merger of Götaland and Svealand (the Land of the Swedes), where Uppsala was located. The exact date of Sweden's formation is unknown (usually, the time when Götaland and Svealand came under the rule of a single king is taken as this date), but it can be said with certainty that the term "Sweden" was definitely not used during the Viking Age.
  • The role of King Ella is played by Ivan Kaye. In Farren Blackburn's film "Hammer of the Gods" (2013), he played the Viking Ivar the Boneless, who killed Ella.
  • In the 9th episode of the 2nd season, during a fight with King Ecbert's men, Bjorn fights with two swords. A few moments later, a shield suddenly appears in one of his hands, and in the next shot, he has a sword in each hand again.
  • Ragnar Lothbrok was either not yet born or was an infant at the time of the raid on Lindisfarne: his exact birth date is unknown, but he sacked Paris in 845, 52 years after the attack on Lindisfarne. Furthermore, Rollo was born only in 860 and was not even a relative of Ragnar. As for Harald, he was born in the 10th century.
  • In the sixth season, Oleg the Prophet's brother gives him two hours to think. However, at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, clocks did not yet exist in Rus. The first mechanical clocks appeared in Moscow only in 1404, and the earlier available sundials or water clocks were not widespread at the time; consequently, an expression such as "two hours have elapsed" could not have been used.
