What's left behind the scenes

  • Wendell Pierce is not a trombonist. He only began taking trombone lessons after being cast in the role, so that he would at least look like he knew how to play on screen. When the sound of the trombone is heard, it is actually being played by a professional trombonist. In one of the episodes of Season 4, Antoine, played by Pierce, is hired to teach an actor (Lenny, played by Wilson Bethel, who also cannot play the trombone) how to convincingly fake playing the instrument on set.
  • The titles of the first and last episodes form the phrase "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans," which is the title of a famous song that first appeared in Arthur Lubin's film "New Orleans" (1947), performed by Billie Holiday and the orchestra conducted by Louis Armstrong.
  • Oliver Thomas in the series is a New Orleans politician forced to resign due to corruption charges. He was played by Oliver Thomas, who served in the New Orleans city administration from 1944 until August 2007, when he resigned in connection with corruption charges. Thomas served two and a half years in prison before being released, and in 2011, he was elected to the city administration once again.
  • Tim Robbins first saw the series during breaks while filming Green Lantern in New Orleans and immediately became a devoted fan. Impressed by the show's realism, Robbins called David Simon and eventually took the director's chair for one of the episodes.
