What's left behind the scenes

Filming for the first season took place from August 10, 2007, until the end of May 2008.
To avoid repeating the fate of the series 'Band of Brothers' (2001), which took several years to produce, the creators of the miniseries 'The Pacific' filmed different episodes simultaneously using multiple crews.
It was specifically for his role in "The Pacific" that Rami Malek was cast in the lead role of the series "Mr. Robot" (2015-2019).
The final battle on Guadalcanal (a volcanic island in the Solomon Islands archipelago) is depicted very accurately, although some details were omitted. The fight lasted three days, and the soldiers ran out of ammunition. Additionally, John Basilone killed three Japanese soldiers with a machete.
On the evening of the very first grueling day at boot camp, Tom Hanks shared his own experiences of going through similar trials during the filming of "Forrest Gump" (Robert Zemeckis, 1994) and "Saving Private Ryan" (Steven Spielberg, 1998) to support the actors.
The series is based on several documentary sources: Eugene Sledge's book 'With the Old Breed', Robert Leckie's memoirs 'Helmet for My Pillow', and the story of Marine John Basilone—the only Marine to receive the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, and the Purple Heart, who died in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
During the screen tests, Rami Malek noticed that he wasn't being filmed by a young cinematographer, as is usually the case, but by an older gentleman. Only over time did he realize that it was Steven Spielberg.
The Marines called Captain Andrew Haldane "Old Man," even though he had only finished his studies just before the war. He was awarded the Silver Star for his participation in the Battle of Cape Gloucester (December 26, 1943 – January 16, 1944). Haldane died on Peleliu island (in the Micronesian state of Palau) in 1944 at the age of 27.
