Short description

Echo is a member of a highly illegal and underground group of individuals whose personalities have been wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Confined between missions to a secret facility known as the Dollhouse, the "Actives" are hired by the wealthy, powerful and connected to wholly become—with mind, personality and physiology—whomever the client wants or needs them to be. They know no other life than the specific engagements they are in at that time—or do they?

What's left behind the scenes

The idea for the series 'Dollhouse' came to Joss Whedon during a lunch to which he was invited by Eliza Dushku to discuss the future of her career.
The names of all the 'Dolls' are words from the NATO phonetic alphabet, used for clarity during radio communication: since different letters can sound similar due to frequency interference, they are replaced by words; for example, Alpha instead of 'A', Bravo instead of 'B', and Echo instead of 'E'.
In several interviews, Joss Whedon mentioned that when coming up with a new persona for Echo, he often draws on the personal experiences and life stories of Eliza Dushku herself.
The plot of the second episode of Season 1 is based on the 1924 short story 'The Most Dangerous Game'.
Joss Whedon wrote on his blog that there were certain scenes in the pilot that he had to reshoot two or three times, almost completely changing their essence in the process, but in the end, they didn't make it into the final cut.
