What's left behind the scenes

  • Alan Cumming's character is named Eliya Gold. This was also the name of the lawyer, the second victim of Kevin Spacey's character in the movie 'Seven'.
  • Episode 13 of season 2 features a clip from the 1993 film Groundhog Day.
  • Julianna Margulies wore a wig for filming. She worked on the series 14 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 9 months of the year.
  • In the episode titles from seasons 1 through 4, the number of words matches the season number; thereafter, the number of words in the episode titles decreases. In the 5th season, each episode title consists of three words (including articles), in the 6th—two words, and in the 7th season—one word.
  • To a certain extent, the series is based on the prostitution scandal involving Eliot Spitzer, as well as other sexual scandals involving American politicians—for example, John Edwards and Bill Clinton.
  • According to Julianna Margulies, after three years of being literally torn between filming and her child, she reached an agreement with the series creators Robert King and Michelle King: starting from the 4th season, in the courtroom scenes—each of which took several hours to film—they would first shoot the scenes in which her character played a significant role, followed by those featuring other members of the ensemble cast where she only had to appear in the background once or twice. After that, she could leave to prepare for subsequent scenes or leave entirely until the next filming day.
  • On July 11, 2012, while filming as a guest star, Kristin Chenoweth was struck by falling lighting equipment. The actress lost consciousness from the impact and was rushed to the nearest hospital. Recovery took two years, and during that time, it was unclear whether Chenoweth would be able to return to the set. In September 2012, she reported that her injuries included, in particular, a skull injury and aching pain in her ribs and hip.
  • The series is set in Chicago, but it was filmed in New York. The pilot episode was filmed in Canada, and there were plans to continue filming there, but Julianna Margulies asked the producers to move production to New York: she had just become a mother and could not spend nine months of the year away from home filming in Canada.
