What's left behind the scenes

  • Dr. House's rat was named after Hugh Laurie's favorite actor, Steve McQueen.
  • Hugh Laurie is prone to bouts of depression. During these periods, he feels that no one needs him and that he does not even deserve the popularity brought to him by the series and the role to which he himself contributed so brilliantly. On the set of House, M.D., the actor is often seen sitting on the floor, worrying that he could have performed better.
  • Hugh Laurie's father was a doctor, and the actor feels a sense of guilt that 'by playing a doctor, I make more money than my father did, simply by pretending to be in the profession.'
  • In Season 5, Episode 13, Taub and Thirteen are watching the movie 'Fletch' starring Chevy Chase on television in the lab. In this episode, Chevy Chase pretended to be a doctor.
  • Robert Sean Leonard (Dr. James Wilson) starred in the film The Violent Hour alongside Scott Foley. Foley played a cameo role as a professional baseball player in the 'Sports Medicine' episode of House, M.D.
  • In the episode “Control,” the man who cannot speak is named Mr. Van der Meer. Gerrit van der Meer is also a producer of the series.
  • As David Shore recalls, during Hugh Laurie's audition for the role of House, executive producer Brian Singer said, 'Look, this is the one we need: a typical American.' Singer was completely unaware of the fact that Laurie is English.
  • The abbreviation M.D. in the series title can be translated not only as 'Doctor of Medicine' (Latin: Medicinæ Doctor), but also as 'mentally deficient.' Notably, in Italy, the abbreviation in the title of the TV series was interpreted as 'medical division.'
  • In the episode 'Fidelity,' Dr. House watches television as the credits roll across the screen. One of the names is 'Marcy Kaplan,' presumably a hairdresser. Marcy J. Kaplan is one of the series' producers.
  • Hugh Laurie plays the piano, saxophone, guitar using the glissando technique, acoustic guitar, and harmonica.
  • In the 11th episode of Season 5, Wilson talks about House's alleged past love and mentions the name Irene Adler. This is another reference to Sherlock Holmes (who appears in the story 'A Scandal in Bohemia').
  • The first actor cast in the role by the series creators was Robert Sean Leonard.
  • Hugh Laurie is also a writer (he wrote the novel The Gun Seller), a musician (he plays several instruments), and rides a motorcycle.
  • In the first episode of the second season, Cuddy hires a male secretary, and House asks, "What's the matter, is J-Date not working anymore?" J-Date is a popular Jewish dating site.
  • Among the shows recorded on Dr. House's TiVo, one can spot the series 'Black Adder,' in which Hugh Laurie played one of the lead roles.
  • Jennifer Morrison, who plays Doctor Cameron, is a natural blonde.
  • The series creator, David Shore, revealed in an interview that Doctor House's character was partially inspired by Sherlock Holmes. Shared traits between the two characters include the ability to reach a quick conclusion after a brief examination of a client/patient, their use of drugs (cocaine and morphine for Holmes, Vicodin for House), and the fact that both characters have only one true friend (Watson and Wilson, respectively), who urges the rational protagonist toward more humane principles.
  • Hugh Laurie's audition for the role of Dr. Gregory House took place in a hotel bathroom in Namibia. The actor was rehearsing his role for the film 'Flight of the Phoenix' there, and according to him, the restroom was the only place with enough light.
  • Based on the series, a computer game was released in 2010 by Legacy Interactive, allowing the player to manage the differential diagnosis process.
  • Hugh Laurie often forgets that House is not married. At the beginning of some scenes, a wedding ring can be seen on his left hand, but usually by the end of the scene... it returns to the right hand.
  • Posters for Hitchcock's film 'Vertigo' and Orson Welles's film 'Touch of Evil' hang in Dr. Wilson's office.
  • In one episode of the third season, while in a police station cell, House calls out to Tritter, addressing him as 'Homer Pile.' This is the name of the character Private Pyle from Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket'.
  • Due to rights and licensing regulations, the series' opening theme music—'Teardrop' by Massive Attack—is not used in broadcasts in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • In the 19th episode of the third season, House boasts that his letter was published in the Universal Report tabloid. In the newspaper, one can see the headlines 'Treasures Found in the Human Brain' and 'Werewolf Dentist Arrested'.
  • In the episode “Games,” the rocker's guitar at the beginning is named after the theme song performed by the group Massive Attack (“Teardrop”).
  • The building used for exterior shots of Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital is actually Princeton University's Frist Campus Center. The building was named after Bill Frist, who headed the majority in the US Senate.
  • In many episodes, Dr. House can be seen wearing Nike sneakers and listening to an iPod, which may be examples of product placement. It can also be noted that he plays a Game Boy Advance and a Nintendo DS, specifically games from the Metroid series.
  • One of the autoimmune diseases, lupus, became a recurring motif of the series. In almost every episode, lupus is mentioned as one of the suspected diagnoses, likely due to the large number of contradictory symptoms characteristic of the disease. The DVD release of the second season even included a featurette titled 'It Could Be Lupus...', edited from scenes in which various doctors (mostly Dr. Cameron) suggest lupus. In one episode, it is revealed that House hides a stash of Vicodin in a book about lupus, justifying it by saying that nobody ever uses the book. In the episode 'Better Half', a patient with lupus finally appears, and House exclaims, 'Could it be lupus?! My dreams have come true!'
  • While auditioning for the series, Hugh Laurie thought that the main character would be Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) and that Dr. House would be his assistant.
  • In the 22nd episode of Season 8, when Wilson is mentioned, House recalls and quotes the film 'Dead Poets Society' (1989)—a movie in which Robert Sean Leonard, the actor who plays Dr. Wilson, actually starred.
