Short description

Drawn from interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as their journals and letters, Band of Brothers chronicles the experiences of these men from paratrooper training in Georgia through the end of the war. As an elite rifle company parachuting into Normandy early on D-Day morning, participants in the Battle of the Bulge, and witness to the horrors of war, the men of Easy knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear - and became the stuff of legend. Based on Stephen E. Ambrose's acclaimed book of the same name.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The area of each of the two largest sets was approximately 4,500 square meters.
  • Captain Dale Dye, the military consultant on set, also played Colonel Robert Sink.
  • The special effects team devised a new way to use squibs—small explosive charges that simulate bullet wounds and holes. Special squibs were developed that used compressed air instead of standard pyrotechnics. This invention allowed the actors to be closer to one another during the explosions.
  • Approximately 700 firearms and nearly 400 rubber prop guns were used during filming.
  • Tony Blair personally met with Steven Spielberg, requesting that the series be filmed in the United Kingdom.
  • Five kitchens were operating simultaneously during filming.
  • Throughout the entire series, there are about 500 roles that have at least a few lines.
  • Life-size dummies were used during filming, which could be placed in any position while holding weapons and gear.
  • Before filming began, the actors underwent a ten-day combat training course.
  • Filming for the first season took place from March to November 2000.
  • The area of the village of Carentan, which was used to film 11 different European towns and villages, covered 4.86 hectares.
  • The construction of the sets cost the creators 17 million dollars.
  • In the second episode, "The Day of the Dead," when Winters destroys the first gun with explosives, a grenade is used as a detonator. As Winters places the German grenade into the gun, he makes a sharp hand movement, pulling the grenade's ring. However, upon closer inspection, it is visible that the grenade is inserted into the barrel with the ring still intact.
  • About 14,000 rounds of ammunition were required for filming the most intense battle scenes.
  • Fifty specially trained extras were constantly present on set. These individuals underwent a training course on weapons handling and played either British or German soldiers in various scenes.
  • The number of extras amounted to about 2,000 people.
  • The title of the series is taken from William Shakespeare's play 'Henry V'.
  • All 1,200 civilian costumes were made from fabrics that were used for clothing in the mid-20th century.
  • Approximately 2,000 pieces of German and American military uniforms were purchased or produced for the shoot.
  • Approximately 150,000 kg of recycled paper were used as snow for the forest set, which was an absolute record at the time of the series' filming. It took the creators four weeks to completely 'cover in snow' the filming location.
  • The forest sets were built in one of the airfield's hangars. The set combined both live and artificial trees.
  • Almost all of the lead actors were cast due to their physical resemblance to their real-life prototypes.
  • Hatfield Aerodrome in Hertfordshire, which was also a filming location for 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998), became the primary filming site for the series. Filming also took place in various parts of England, the Netherlands, and France. Hatfield Aerodrome offered the creators 405 hectares of open space, as well as numerous empty hangars, making it an ideal location for building sets.
  • The creators signed a contract with the Corcoran Boot Co. to produce 500 pairs of paratrooper boots according to original army specifications.
  • By the third episode, more pyrotechnics and ammunition had already been used than during the entire filming of 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998).
  • All the insignia seen in the film are either authentic or accurate replicas.
  • At the end of the third episode, it is stated that Private Albert Blithe died in 1948. In reality, he successfully recovered from a neck wound and passed away in 1967 due to kidney failure.
