What's left behind the scenes

  • For the filming of the series, a warehouse of approximately 28,000 square meters was rented in the industrial district of Joppa, Maryland. The series' filming location is actually part of an old distribution center, and all driving scenes were filmed against a green screen in a room that previously served as a cold storage facility for furs. The following sets were located inside the warehouse building: the Oval Office, the Underwood house (first floor, basement, and second floor), the Capitol building, various government representative offices, the governor's office in South Carolina, and various luxury hotel rooms.
  • Each of the first five seasons of the series consists of 13 episodes—one episode for each card in a suit.
  • The series is an adaptation of the original BBC miniseries 'House of Cards' (1990), which in turn was based on the 1989 novel of the same name by its screenwriter, Michael Dobbs. Dobbs was a prominent member of the British Conservative Party during the premierships of Margaret Thatcher and John Major.
  • The series credits do not mention hacktivist Gregg Housh, who worked with actor Jimmy Simpson for six months as a computer hacker consultant.
  • Following the scandal involving Kevin Spacey in October 2017, Netflix announced that the sixth season of 'House of Cards' would be the last.
  • Kate Mara, who played Zoe Barnes, knew from the very beginning that her character was destined to die; however, she was forced to keep this a secret until the premiere of the second season and lie when asked about the progress of filming (she could not reveal prematurely that she was no longer participating in the shoot).
  • The uniqueness of this series lies in the fact that its creators were guaranteed complete creative freedom in terms of screenwriting, filming, and producing the project, without any obstructive oversight. It was this very freedom that attracted Oscar winners like David Fincher, who became one of more than forty producers.
  • Mahershala Ali (who played Remy) asked the writers to remove his character from the series after the fourth season.
  • The sound made by Frank Underwood's ring (played by Kevin Spacey) when he bangs his fist on the table at the very end of the final episode of Season 2 was incorporated into the sound design of the Netflix logo shown before all original projects.
  • Before the premiere of the second season, Barack Obama asked viewers of the series 'House of Cards' to refrain from posting plot spoilers for the new season. The corresponding post appeared on the U.S. President's official Twitter account. In early February 2014, it became known that 'House of Cards' had been renewed for a third season.
  • In the third episode of the third season, Tolokonnikova, Alekhina, and Verzilov played themselves. According to the plot, they criticize the Russian president during an official dinner in Washington held on the occasion of his visit to the USA.
  • Producer David Fincher immediately offered the role of Claire Underwood to Robin Wright, whom he had directed in the 2011 thriller 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.' He promised the actress that her opinion would be heard during the development of the character.
