What's left behind the scenes

  • The series is an adaptation of the comic book series of the same name, which began publication in 2003.
  • One of the series' producers is Robert Kirkman, the author and writer of the comic.
  • The actors who played zombies had to attend zombie school to learn how to walk and move like zombies.
  • The emblem seen on the t-shirt of Rick's son, Carl, is the logo of another comic created by Robert Kirkman, 'Science Dog'.
  • The name of the doctor, Edwin Jenner, is not accidental. British scientist Edward Jenner was the pioneer of the vaccine; he was the first to conceive of introducing a harmless cowpox virus into the human body as protection against infection.
  • The thirteenth episode of the second season was filmed on a fairly cold night, so the production crew had to use CGI after filming to remove the steam coming from the zombies' mouths.
  • The town of King County, where Rick Grimes is from, does not actually exist. Frank Darabont did this as a tribute to his friend Stephen King.
  • In one of the scenes filmed in Atlanta, Michael Rooker fired a weapon while standing on the roof of a building. Local residents thought a crime was being committed and called the police. A SWAT team responded to the call.
  • In 2009, Thomas Jane, a friend of Frank Darabont, agreed to play the role of Rick Grimes; however, he later signed a contract for another series with the cable and satellite network HBO and declined Darabont's offer. The actor now admits that he regrets this.
  • The church where much of the action takes place in the first half of Season 5 is not a real temple. The building was constructed specifically for the show and 'aged' to make it look authentic. This is explained in the 'bonus features' section of the DVD: the creators of the series understood that many bloody events would unfold in this building, and therefore no active church would allow its premises to be used for such purposes. On the other hand, Alexandria, where the action moves in the second half of the season, is a real town (Senoia, Georgia). Its charter contains a special paragraph stating that residents are prohibited from protesting the filming of movies and TV series within the town.
  • It was originally planned that Hershel would die in the finale of the second season, but the authors reconsidered their decision, deciding that the character was popular enough.
  • The series does not explain the reasons for Michonne's hatred of the Governor, and in the end, he only loses an eye. In the plot of the graphic novel, however, he raped her for many days. When Michonne finally finds an opportunity for revenge, it costs the Governor an eye, an arm, and a testicle.
  • Dale, played by Jeffrey DeMann, was not supposed to die so soon after the start of the series. When his friend Frank Darabont left the project, the actor asked the producers to have his character killed off. DeMann later changed his mind, but his character's death had already been written into the plot and the budget for the filming had been allocated, so his request to keep Dale alive was rejected.
  • Many deaths in the series and the comics are similar, but the characters they befall often differ. In the comics, Shane is first shot dead by Carl, and then his undead version is shot dead by Rick. In the series, Shane is stabbed by Rick, and undead Shane is shot by Carl. Dale's fate is shared by Hershel and Bob. In the comics, Dale loses a leg due to a walker and hunters. In the comics, the Governor beheads Tyreese; in the series, he beheads Hershel. In the series, Tyreese is bitten in the arm, which Michonne then cuts off, but he dies anyway, whereas in the comics, he loses an arm and is then killed by Morgan Jones.
  • In the comics, Morgan Jones dies during an undead attack on Alexandria. This attack is foreshadowed in the season 5 finale, "No one Left Behind," where Morgan saves Daryl and Aaron from a crowd of walkers with the letter "W" on their foreheads who escaped from trucks. Later, bandits from the "Wolves" lead those same turned walkers back into the trucks, where they find Aaron's backpack containing photos of Alexandria.
  • Bob, Tyreese, Daryl, and Michonne hear a radio broadcast from Terminus 8 days before Bob arrives, and nine days before Daryl and Michonne arrive. Tyreese never made it to Terminus.
  • Within a single day, Lori manages to 'spend time' with both Shane and Rick. The viewer is led to believe that this is her first time with Shane (she took off the necklace with Rick's ring). Consequently, it turns out that either the first or the second could be Judith's biological father. In the finale of Season 1, while they are still at the CDC, Shane tells Lori, 'You know, we have a lot of history,' (which suggests that it would not be her first time 'spending time with him' later on).
  • Scott Wilson, who plays Hershel Greene, played a governor in the western 'Jack Bull' (John Badham, 1999). In 'The Walking Dead,' his character is killed by the Governor, played by David Morrissey. In the western 'Young Guns II' (Jeff Murphy, 1990), Wilson also played Governor Lew Wallace, whose real-life counterpart promised to save Billy 'The Kid' Bonney.
  • In one shot, a background zombie can be seen drinking mineral water.
  • In episode 15 of season 3, at the 31-minute mark, it can be seen that the wheels on Merle's car are different from the ones shown a minute earlier.
  • In seasons 2 and 3, Rick and the others drive a 2012 Hyundai Tucson crossover. This is a continuity error, as the zombie apocalypse in the series takes place in 2010.
  • When Andrea fires Rick's revolver, the sound of a shell casing hitting the ground can be heard. In reality, revolvers do not automatically eject empty casings.
