What's left behind the scenes

  • The German submarine (the 'laughing swordfish' emblem, the fly on the portrait) in the 'Return of the Eagle' arc is a reference to the film 'Das Boot' (1981).
  • One of the techniques used by the series' creators is the extensive quoting of films that have become classics of adventure cinema.
  • The employees of "Laguna" use a Plymouth Road Runner. In the second season (after the incident with Jane), they switched to a Pontiac GTO.
  • Revy primarily smokes Marlboro Lights, and Miss Balalaika smokes Parliament in one of the episodes. Chang smoked Gitanes in one episode, and in several episodes, Rock was seen smoking Natural American Spirit. In the seventh episode of the first season, Revy and Rock smoked Natural American Spirit Medium together. In later episodes, Rock smokes cigarettes with a Japanese flag on the pack.
  • A poster for the Western 'The Wild Bunch' hangs in Revee's room.
  • The characteristic grunting sound made by Revy during the boarding of the ship 'White Heather' is a reference to the film 'Under Siege' (1992).
  • The characters mainly drink Heireken beer, the bottle and label design of which are very similar to the Dutch beer Heineken. Occasionally they drink Singha Beer, a brand of beer that exists in Thailand.
  • The titles of Season 2, episodes 10 and 12 ("The Dark Tower" and "The Gunslingers," respectively) are references to Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series.
  • The scenes in which Roberta exits a burning building and then chases a car exactly replicate the corresponding episodes from the film 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day' (1991).
  • The title 'Black Lagoon' is used in the series only once (excluding the credits). Dutch's logistics company is called 'Lagoon,' which is also the call sign he uses over the radio.
  • The gang of neo-Nazis is a parody based on the film 'The Blues Brothers' (1980).
  • Roberta's shootout with the Manisarer cartel at the "Yellow Flag" bar, and a similar scene involving Fabiola, are recreations of a scene from the movie "Desperado" (1995).
  • The Hotel Moscow paratroopers heading out on the operation following Balalaika is a mirror image of a similar scene from the film 'Die Hard 2' (1990). The difference is that in the film, the people move toward the camera, whereas in the anime, the camera shows the backs of the people as they depart.
  • The boat is equipped with a search radar capable of detecting aerial and surface objects, yet the radar antenna itself is nowhere to be seen.
  • In episode 27, the name of the medication Roberta is taking is visible as Rilalin, methylphenidate. The real-life medication is Ritalin, also known as methylphenidate.
  • At the end of episode 18, Ed's sister says the phrase 'God’s in his Heaven, All’s right with the world' from Robert Browning's poem 'Pippa Passes.' This phrase is also well-known to many as the motto of the NERV agency in the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.
  • In episode 15, 'Swan Song at Dawn,' Gretel holds Edo at gunpoint with a machine gun, and the distance between them is about one meter. When Gretel reaches for the pistol around Edo's waist, the machine gun cannot remain pointed at his head, as the small girl's arm would not be long enough.
  • Mr. Chang wears his pistols exactly like Nicolas Cage's character in the movie 'Face/Off' (1997) (two holsters attached to the back of his trousers).
  • There is a newspaper in the intro of every episode. The readable portions of the text reveal certain details about the episodes.
  • In the early episodes, a group of mercenaries appears; they were based on Executive Outcomes, a private military company (essentially mercenaries) that operated in Africa in the 90s (similar name, and they also used Soviet-made Mi helicopters).
