What's left behind the scenes

The English title 'Mad Men,' which translates literally into Russian as 'Безумцы' (Madmen), is actually a shorthand for the phrase 'Madison ad men' or 'Madison Avenue ad men,' referring to the location of the largest US advertising agencies in the 1950s and 60s. During this period, 'Madison Avenue' was a generic term used in American business parlance to refer to the US advertising industry.
At the end of episode 8 of season 5, the Beatles song 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is played. The creators paid $250,000 for its use. This was the first time a studio recording by the British group was used in a television series.
The pilot episode was filmed at Silvercup Studios and various locations in New York City; subsequent episodes were filmed at Los Angeles Center Studios.
The writers, including Weiner, conducted extensive research on the time period in which 'Mad Men' is set to ensure that most aspects of the show—including the set design, costumes, and props—were historically accurate.
Speaking about the scenes involving smoking, Weiner said: 'Doing this show without smoking would be a joke. It would be sanitary and it would be fake.'
The H.J. Heinz Company used an idea based on a pitch from the show's sixth season in a real advertising campaign. Along with the ad, a press release was issued stating: 'The "Pass the Heinz" campaign, created by Don Draper, took 50 years to be realized. But today it is just as fresh as it was on the day of its presentation.' The pitch featured photographs of food against a white background: a cheeseburger, fries, and a steak, with the caption 'Pass the Heinz' above them. The company emphasized that they purchased the rights to the idea from the show's creators and commissioned the David advertising agency to recreate the slogans from the series, as the original files had not been preserved.
The crash of an American Airlines flight, which plays a key role in the second episode of the second season, actually occurred during astronaut John Glenn's meeting; 95 people perished in the accident.
