Short description

Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed overnight from legendary monsters to fellow citizens. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders, government officials, and vampire fundamentalists around the world have chosen their sides. But in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the eighth episode of Season 1, the vampire Eddie tells Lafayette: "I always look forward to Monday nights. First 'Heroes', then you come over." This is a reference to the American television series 'Heroes'.
  • The exterior of the house of the characters played by Denis O'Hare and Theo Alexander was filmed on location in Longwood, Mississippi. It is an octagonal building, which is uncommon for the local architecture of that period; an onion dome is visible on the tower, and the building itself remained unfinished (construction was interrupted by the Civil War of 1861-1865). The owners never completed the construction, choosing instead to furnish and equip the basement, where they settled.
  • In the fourth episode of Season 1, while calling Bill and Sookie over, Eric addresses Pam in Swedish. He says the phrase "Vår lilla djurpark börjar växa till sig," which means "Our little zoo is expanding." She replies "Jag vet," which translates to "I know."
  • Michael Raymond-James (who played René) worked on his pronunciation with a linguist, and it was on their advice that he inserted French words into his speech.
  • Ian Somerhalder auditioned for the role of Jason Stackhouse in 'True Blood'.
  • In the second episode of Season 1, a newspaper with the headline "Angelina Adopts Vampire Baby" can be seen on a table in Tara's house. This is a nod to actress Angelina Jolie, who is well known for her philanthropic work.
  • To film the opening shots, the crew spent four days in Chicago, Louisiana (where the church was filmed) and Seattle (where the bar scenes and bodies were filmed). Whenever they saw something worthwhile along the way, crew members would jump out of their cars and film, or ask for permission first and then film (for example, a man in a rocking chair and his house). The role of the man dancing with the girl was played by one of the series' executive producers, and the boys smeared with berry juice were his children.
  • In episode 4 of Season 7, from minute 22 to 26, flashbacks of Eric and Pam are shown dated 1996. In their movie store, a shelving unit with the sign "DVD for sale" can be seen behind Eric; however, DVD optical discs were only invented in Japan in 1996 and did not become widespread in the US until later, specifically in March 1997.
  • In the first episode of Season 3, Sookie visits Eric to report Bill's disappearance and finds him in the basement having sex with a new dancer. Eric introduces her as Evetta from Estonia; Evetta says "Hello!" in fluent Russian, and Eric replies to her in Russian, "Wait here!"
  • In the first episode of Season 1, when Sookie comes home from work, her grandmother is reading a book titled "Last Scene Alive." It was written by Charlaine Harris, who is the author of the Sookie Stackhouse book series upon which the show is based.
