What's left behind the scenes
- It wasn't originally intended that Sean Delaney (who played Kenny) and Fiona Shaw (Caroline) would play son and mother. Sandra Oh noticed the resemblance between them only in the third week of filming, and it was only then that screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge made these characters close relatives.
- Sandra Oh recalled that filming in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, was the most fun. If they needed to drive but parked cars were in the way, local musclemen would appear and simply push the obstructing cars onto the sidewalks. This was inevitably accompanied by a cacophony of sirens and car alarms.
- To get into character, Jodie Comer often listened to the Swedish electronic music group Little Dragon.
- The title of each episode is a play on a phrase spoken by one of the characters in that same episode.
- Jodie Comer was at a music festival in Spain with friends (and was suffering from a hangover at the time) when she received a call inviting her to audition in Los Angeles alongside Sandra Oh. Realizing her chances were slim to none, she nonetheless endured a 13-hour flight to Los Angeles; five minutes of auditioning with Sandra Oh was enough to land her the role.
- Sandra Oh shared that she had waited 30 years for a role like this. When she was first given the script, she had no idea which part she was being considered for and assumed it would be a supporting role, as is typical for actresses of Asian descent; however, her agent assured her that she would be playing Eva.
- Jodie Comer learned the foreign languages spoken by her character in the series by recording the lines by ear and reading the written text from a script.
- All scenes in Season 4 that were supposedly filmed abroad were actually shot in the UK, as searching for suitable locations overseas was impossible due to the pandemic.
- Phoebe Waller-Bridge began writing the script for this series after her previous project, Fleabag (2016-2019), ended.
