Short description

It is July 1941, and the Nazis are advancing towards Kyiv. A special squad is tasked with investigating major cases by acting both at the frontline and in the city itself, where rising criminals are joining German subversives in infiltrating the city, while a number of Soviet government representatives are happily profiting from other people’s misery.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the 3rd episode of the 1st season, at the 23rd minute, Ivan Rokotov sits in the back seat of a car. When the shot changes, he is suddenly in the front passenger seat, and upon the next change of angle, he returns to his original position.
  • Sergey Sosnovsky was initially cast in the role of Grigory Ivanovich Fedorenko. However, the casting process for the other roles took so long that by the time filming began, Sosnovsky was busy with other projects. The role was offered to Alexander Pankratov-Cherny, who happened to be available. While developing the character, Pankratov-Cherny drew on childhood memories of a blacksmith who lived in the same village where the actor grew up. The man had lost a leg in the war and used a prosthesis; it was from him that Pankratov-Cherny "borrowed" the character traits and the limp.
  • Emblems and insignia of various branches of the Armed Forces, as well as shoulder straps, orders, and medals, were crafted using old patterns specifically for the film. The studio had some authentic weaponry from the Great Patriotic War, and the rest was sourced from museums and private collections. Before filming began, all actors underwent special courses on the handling of small arms and received official certifications. The series featured the Degtyaryov and Maxim machine guns preserved from the WWII era.
