What's left behind the scenes

  • The papal vestments worn by Jude Law in the role of Pope Pius XIII were sewn in a tailor shop that actually produces clothing for the Vatican.
  • Being a great fan of Paolo Sorrentino's films and learning about a Spanish-speaking role in the upcoming series, actor Javier Cámara personally contacted the director to request the part.
  • The opening credits are shown against the backdrop of the following paintings and frescoes: 'Adoration of the Shepherds' by Gerrit van Honthorst (1592-1656), 'Delivery of the Keys to Saint Peter' by Pietro Perugino (1450-1523), 'The Conversion of Saul' by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610), 'Peter of Amiens' by Francesco Ayetz (1791-1882), 'Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata' by Gentile da Fabriano (c. 1370-1427), 'Saint Thomas of Villanueva' by Mateo Cerezo (1637-1666), 'Michelangelo showing Pope Pius a model of St. Peter's Basilica' by Passignano (1559-1638), 'St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre' by François Dubois (1529-1584), as well as an icon depicting the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD.
  • Throughout the series, Cardinal Voiello, who is of Neapolitan origin, is portrayed as a fan of the Napoli football club, and specifically its star Gonzalo Higuaín. This character trait seemed quite amusing to Italian viewers in light of the player's transfer to Juventus a few weeks before the premiere episode of the series was screened at the 2016 Venice Film Festival.
  • None of the episodes were filmed in the Vatican. All the sets, including the Sistine Chapel and the papal library, were recreated at Cinecittà Studios. According to the director, the Vatican refused any cooperation, so the creators of the series had to recreate the sets, filming from various points and angles.
  • The sculpture in the opening credits, which depicts Pope John Paul II knocked down by a meteorite, is an exact replica of the installation 'The Ninth Hour' by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. The original work sold at a Christie's auction for $886,000 in 2001.
  • The budget for the first season was $45 million. Thus, upon its release, 'The Young Pope' became the most expensive series in the history of Italian cinema.
  • The soundtrack from the movie Gattaca, which starred Jude Law, plays in episode 8.
