What's left behind the scenes

  • Frank Dillane, who played Nick Clark, came to the auditions without having seen a single episode of The Walking Dead (2010).
  • The first episode and all location scenes were filmed in Los Angeles, while all other scenes were filmed in Vancouver, Canada.
  • The song 'Negro y Azul: Ballad of Heisenberg,' which played in the Mercado market scene in Season 3, Episode 10, is a direct reference to another AMC series, 'Breaking Bad'.
  • Travis Manawa is played by Cliff Curtis, an actor of Māori descent (the indigenous people of New Zealand). Throughout his film career, Curtis has played numerous characters of various ethnicities—Latinos, African Americans, Iraqis, Indians, etc.—but he has rarely had the chance to play characters who speak his native language. According to Curtis, the role of Travis is one of the few in which he did not have to hide his traditional body tattoos. In the Māori language, 'Manawa' means 'mangrove tree,' though depending on the context, the word can also refer to a person's hand, breath, or heart.
  • Frank Dillane and Garrett Dillahunt informed the show's creators of their plans to work on other projects, and as a result, their characters (Nick Clark and John Dorey, respectively) were killed off.
  • The series premiere broke cable television records for viewership in the 18-49 age demographic (6.3 million people) and in terms of total audience (10.13 million).
