What's left behind the scenes
- According to the series creator Rebecca Sugar, she chose the voice actors for the Diamonds based on their singing abilities.
- All Diamonds appear as women and even use feminine pronouns, although it was previously clearly stated that Diamonds have no gender as they are sentient gems. Steven is the only male Diamond. Subsequently, Rebecca Sugar reimagined the entire concept and stated that all Diamonds are female, and are only genderless in a technical sense.
- At first, 'Steven Universe' was a working title, but over time it was decided to make it permanent.
- Steven is based on Rebecca's younger brother, Steven Sugar, who also worked on the animated series as a background artist.
